NIKON D4 announced

At the risk of repeating myself from the other thread yesterday, the F8 autofocus will be a real treat for wildlife shooters.

I would usually look at things like ISO performance as the main reason to think of upgrading bodies but the D3s is so good as it is that I'm not sure a D4 is something I need.

Would be nice though :)

Which is now gone on the 1Dx.

(Disclaimer - the 1Dx will autofocus at F8, just not on lenses with F8 as the largest aperture e.g. 300 F4 with a 2x Extender).

Hes so annoyed he even goes to say the D7000 is better

He begs for money by saying he has an ever expanding family.

The man needs a vasectomy

If I had a big pile of cash knocking around earning b****r all interest I know I'd be tempted as it does look very nice indeed.

I think Joe's blog comment is the standout thing for me - the "smoothness", which is something you could see between a APS camera and the D700/D3 originally, but by the looks of it its smoother still.

It is a slightly esoteric thing and certainly not something you can quantify into figures which is all photography forums ever seem to care about.

I also don't think KR's somewhat scathing quip about backlit buttons is to be underestimated either. Its not a huge scientific leap forward, but boy would I like them!

As it stands, I don't have the money and I'm still not convinced FX is the right platform for motorsport journalism.

Its going to be a long old 6-8 months before Nikon announce a new DX body :(

The XQD memory card option looks like an absolutely brilliant addition....

100 frame of continuous RAW.

Looks like a nice upgrade.

I havent looked at all the specs yet, but does that mean you can't have two CF cards mirroring each other? does one have to be a XQD card, whatever that is?

i doubt you could buy one for some time even if you wanted to.

if you look through the lates nikon pro mag you will see a lot of pros who use the D700 in the expo section.

it appears i am not the only one who would rather have the battery pack as a add on,which is why along with the quality its still a good camera when you want that and a more discreet.,ighter carry.

i wont be rushing to sell my D3s even if the D4 proves to be better its all relative D3,D700,D3s still great cameras....

someone tell me what this is

the F8 autofocus
The ability to focus when the biggest aperture supported by the lens is f8. Most often used when you have a long f4/f5.6v lens and a 2x or 1.4x teleconvertor attached. Needed by birders...

Not sure of all the ins and outs, but I do know this means it will be possible to use AF together with a 1.7x or a 2x TC on some of the larger lenses, such as the 600mm F4. At present it is only possible to use a 1.4 TC with AF on this lens as fitting one of these to a lens obviously increases the effective aperture, 1.4 TC increases the aperture on an F4 lens to F5.6. Putting a 2x TC will increase the aperture to F8....

I got all excited when the rumours indicated the D800 would be near the D7000's size. Do not like unnecesary bulk.

Not used them mind so no recommendation here!! Mate got one off hdewcameras for £1450 recently too but they're now offering higher with 3 yr warranty.

Will keep hdew in mind. They UK bodies or imports that they handle waranty for?

Yep, 1 will have to be XQD. Its starting speeds are faster than CF is now - when looking at buffer performance the CF card is going to be the bottleneck. But obviously they couldn't have gone to 2 XQD, the rage that would have generated...

but its weird because my sigma 50-500mm os at 500mm is f6.3 and i have used the 51pt 3d tracking many time on the d300 and d700 and it seems to work no probs, despite what it says here about only 15 point being usable with f5.6 and slower lenses.

Only 16.2 Mps though, and with the Canon 1Dx at 18 Mps does this mean the high megapixel war is at an end. With people waiting for a 30 Mp 5D MkIII (high hopes) I really can't see this happening. Will the masses waiting for the all singing and dancing 5D3 be disappointed if they don't get what they want. I'm glad I got my 21 Mp 5D2 when I did. I doubt very much I'll ever get a chance to have a play with the D4 or the Canon 1Dx for that matter, but I'm sure it'll be a very useable, high quality camera that will be a favorite of the Nikonites for years to come.

The reason why this gets a mention is because the Canon 1DX has had this removed... so when Nikon announce their new flagship they are trying to capitalise on the thing that so many (mainly birders, but other length queens too) bashed Canon for the other week...

Just been on nikonrumours. They reckon the D5 will be here in March!

Yes, the main reason I won't buy a D4 is actually because I know for sure that their is a replacement coming, therefore buying one is a waste of money ;-)

He makes some valid points

Not sure what his gripes are though. He's basically dismissing all the improvements as irrelevant. I don't really understand what his expectations were.

Clearly not 'irrelevant' but if for example like me you got a brand new D3 at almost half the expected launch price of the D4, would you say that the improvements are worth another £2k?

My guess is that Nikon didn't give him access to one pre-launch and he's throwing his toys out of the pram. The Fro had access so he's obviously better thought of by someone at Nikon......which given his quirky style is interesting.

Nikon don't disable AF when the aperture gets too small, they just don't certify it as it's out of spec. Put a 2x TC on that lens and your camera will still try to focus, even if it keeps missing. Nikon saying it works now is them saying "you can use it and we stand by it performing as expected".

There will be people who can justify it certainly, just as I'm sure you found a way to justify the huge price of a D3 over say, a D90. By the sound of it, the high iso performance could be two stops better than a D3. To some, that might be crucial and worth the asking price alone. But surely these are the things kenny R should be focussing on rather than moaning that it looks a bit like a 16 year old film body and then suggesting that things haven't moved on at all since then. Utter cobblers in my opinion.

I the long term it matters not, but Canon will be fuming.

They announce 5 months before shipping & take all the limelight.

Then the upstart comes along along and all the talk will be about them & they the temerity to deliver in 6 weeks.

It is going to be great seeing all the comparisons (mainly at Hi ISO & Video I reckon).

I still think D700 and D3 will more then enough to shoot what i want to shoot.

Having 11fps, 4 mega pixel more and ISO up to 12800 can justified me spending the cash on the D4.

If i'm on the market to buy a brand new D3s i might as well get the D4.

I'm still happy to go buy a used D3 and D700.

ISO and low light performance is the key for me and i don't shoot more than 6400 in general so a D700 will do me fine :)

Just ordered mine, Calumet have told me 14th Feb... Happy Valentine for me!

Looking carefully at the spec sheet there's a few other things in there that are less headline, but interesting:

(native) ISO 100 (one of the biggest bug bears I have from the D300/D700/D3 range)

An extra EV of AF sensitivity (-2 EV) - presumably useful when shooting in the dark!

Some AF area modes I've never seen before:

"Face-priority AF, wide-area AF, normal-area AF, subject-tracking AF"

Not quite sure what that really means, but certainly it does mean face detection of some sort.

And I also saw that Sony have announced the first XQD card today too... at roughly 148 quid for 32gb or 90 ish quid for a 16gb.
