Nikon D3xxx owners thread

although she does say this
You probably don’t want to use Auto Area mode unless you’re handing the camera over to someone who’s inexperienced and who wouldn’t know how to use the other two modes. Otherwise, stick with Single Point for still subjects and with Dynamic Area for moving subjects
(my 2pennoth.although having said that auto sounds ok for landscapes)

That's fine as long as you know what you are doing.

tomorrow when photographing the deer I will be using centre point focus and recompose im thinking at the moment, will update you tomorrow

there is no doubt that the best way to learn your camera is practice and read and listen and watch, but not all at the same time hehehe

John - why not just use Auto Area for landscapes/buildings, etc?
oh you were just suggesting it to John ,not saying thats what you yourself use then?
oops actually you do use it
your quote I don't normally use single point for landscapes unless there is a particular item that I really want to stand out. I use Auto Area generally.

very occasionally I think to myself after a frustrating day shooting,
F----k this and consider just putting it on Auto and jpeg lol

"Auto Area AF" not "Auto Mode" as in letting the camera make ALL the decisions. RTFM :);)

yes I knew what you meant, but im not in agreement necessarily because it might not know what you want to be the main focus
my point being when you said the camera is a tool then yes use the focus point you want not let it decide

your not a gemini like me are you, if so God help you lol
I'm a gemini, I was certainly over thinking when I was picking which camera to buy. Trying too many different types of photography at once when I started. Picking one and learning it sped up my understanding and allowed me to carry over knowledge from one area when learning something new.

I will get out with the camera again and have another bash, see if I can get better focusing. I think I just need to slow down a little. Not so easy, just walking about waiting for an interesting subject and quickly point camera and take the photo. If I tried that, I would probably miss focus most of the time. :)

Serious answer

Tape the lens to a single focal length, say 23mm (35mm FF equivalent), You can use a decent rubber band to do this, then just work with that. It will improve your composition, as you will have to work harder to get a shot and therefore slow you down. You may think you miss some shots by not having the zoom flexibility, but you will end up the shots that you didn't expect.

I find by working slower I take less shots, but get more keepers.

(and then @SsSsSsSsSnake will tell you to chop it in and get an X100 :D:D:D)

To be honest I loved having the kit lens set to 24mm, but then there is always something just that little further on and then it zoom time. Hmm, I did have a good strong rubber band some place.

Just popped the kit lens back on and going to take some photos around the house and garden. Might also try some along the canal, set to about 24mm.
Bloomin hard trying to take photos of interesting things, or turn boring things into something interesting. :)

There's not much point taking pictures of something boring. If you don't see something interesting in it, your heart won't be in it.

Went for a walk this morning along a Canal, nothing much of interest other than a canal boat that came chugging past. Or maybe I am not looking hard enough.

Off to bed now to dream about photographing stunning top end models, with my D3300 and dinky little kit lens. Well I did have a dream last night about taking photos with it and the photos turned into glossy film photos.

What are your other passions and interests, you'll probably find you see more in those than anything else and you'll enjoy photographing them.
First subject that I have a great passion for, can't mention on here. Second subject that I also have a passion for, that too can't be mentioned on this forum ;).
try looking from different angles.get on the floor and on a ladder, dont fall lol
I did get on the floor last week to take photos of some plants in the garden, the dog thought I was playing and jumped on me. My dodgy knee went and it hurt getting back up. :(

Anyway, early night tonight a lot on tomorrow.

Goodnight peeps am off to bed...

one of the massage parlours near me were advertising for a photographer. nearly did but didn't know if I could meet their expectations, would have been interesting

The d3300 doesn't have a commander mode so off camera flash can get expensive for me at the moment and don't like the direct in your face flash.
Andy posted this on the monopod thread,
ive just shot the d3300 with a Newer TT560 manual flash off camera triggered with my built in flash on, i set it to 1/32 manual but it works in TTL menu setting and any amount in manual.
am I missing something when he says it doesn't have a commander.

thought that was what he meant but setting the on camera flash to its lowest setting isn't too bad I guess, it does trigger the ext flash at least.
