Nikon D3xxx owners thread

Thought I spotted you on the back Button focusing thread. I have been following it with interest. Pretty good once you get the hang of it. Love my D3300 and 35 mm even more now.
Can you please tell me where I can find the button focusing thread?

A quick snap with the D3300 and the 35mm 1.8G lens. As I say just a quick snap, as the Canal boat went under the bridge that I was walking over.

@Al1944 What Camera are you using now?

Fuji X-E2 with 16-50. Like the small form factor and the jpegs are great. However I must admit that for me the D3300 was more comfortable to hold and whilst the EVF on the Fuji is handy when using exposure compensation (as you see the result before taking the shot) I prefer the OVF of a DSLR. So things could well change again sometime in the future ;)

I used to think Nikon lenses were expensive!

I still use my Fuji X10 as I do like messing with knobs and dials( I think I have said that before) , but D3300 is my main go to Camera( I think I have also said that before :)). I still regret selling my lenses and the old D80 body, ( I think I have also said that line before :D).

this is Bradgate Park, this photo I took in 2015 was included in the Bradgate park 2017 calendar,it was also used in black and white as a wrap a round photo on front and back of a novel released 2016

Nice. Just had a look at it on your flickr, taken at f/16 and 16mm. Where would you tend to put focus on a shot like this? As I tend to struggle with picking a focus point on such scenes.

thanks Jon.
im no expert or even beginner but I understand general rule focus about a third into the scene ,I will try and find a link to an experienced writer on this

Thanks for the link, very interesting reading. Going to have another reread again, to try and get it to sink in. I should be searching this stuff out myself, not sitting on my A*se and getting you to get the info for me  :$.

On the canal this morning, I did go f/8 and focus on a bridge, then tried focusing on the tow-path but neither worked. Neither looked sharp back to front, so going to have a read and get out and try again.

Thanks again for providing that link. I am sure I owe you a pint by now. (y)

not quite sure what you mean re focus issue with bridge

John - why not just use Auto Area for landscapes/buildings, etc?

This morning I was standing on the canal path, and there was a bridge a little way in the distance. Choosing where to put one of the eleven focus points, I fist placed the point on the bridge, whole scene was not in focus. I then tried focusing on the towpath, a little way into the scene. The whole scene was not in focus again. I was at f/8 on the 35mm lens.

I would probably be better off putting the kit lens on set to wide angle, and a smaller aperture. That just might do it I think. Oh and possibly a tripod. :)

I use the centre focus point only usually, as its the only cross type and is more accurate then either re compose whilst holding down the shutter halfway or move that centre focus point to where I want it with the dial
does that make sense?

I did normally focus then re compose, but been trying the BBF method.

I don't normally use single point for landscapes unless there is a particular item that I really want to stand out. I use Auto Area generally.

although she does say this
You probably don’t want to use Auto Area mode unless you’re handing the camera over to someone who’s inexperienced and who wouldn’t know how to use the other two modes. Otherwise, stick with Single Point for still subjects and with Dynamic Area for moving subjects
(my 2pennoth.although having said that auto sounds ok for landscapes)

do you mean you BBF on the bridge but then take a photo of something else?
Sorry I think I am confusing things here and I have not even had a drink.

Walking along the canal and I was taking photos of anything and everything I was taking photos of my dog running then of passing canal boats and passing joggers and cyclists. Amongst all this mayhem I tried for a photo of a bridge in the distance. I think I possibly need to slow down and concentrate on what I am doing.
