Nikon D3xxx owners thread

@SsSsSsSsSnake asked me to cross post a couple of these here..so I will. I started out with a D3100 years ago and bought my son one 2 years ago so i thought i'd give those 3fps a try at the weekend

My son has fallen out of love with his d3100 since he tried the d500. At 14...he can go whistle
Very inspiring to see what can be done with basic kit.excellent.
Would you mind sharing how you go about taking such shots for the benefit of us lesser mortals lol.

I'll check what settings I used on his camera when i get home (y)

panning, so i move the camera with the car, half press the shutter to achieve focus about mid point along the vehicle, then choose my moment
I know i changed a lot of my son's settings as he was complaining that he couldn't hit a barn door

Correct so you can check the green circle lower left for confirmation, and dont forget, knowing what to do is one thing ,the other is practice practice just like piano scales.

Just been testing that a minute ago, got the camera at my side. Focused on my finger and slowly brought my finger towards the lens, and yes it does keep focus. Brilliant thanks (y)

PS

What a numpty I have been!

Im going to go where a lot of birds fly over water and practice the tecniques, its not easy and this is from people whove been doing it a bit too,
Thats how im looking at my photography now ,with less self critiscm, more im seeing it as a learning curve then i dont get so down about it.
You know i finally feel ive got what i need, not what i want.
Took the 50mm 1.8 back to Jessops got the 70-300 afp vr to gomwith the 18-55 afp vr.
Thats it simple basic kit with a basic camera body thats got a great sensor, now i am going to concentrate on composition and study and learn the
Kit ive got.im not interested in purchasing any more bodies or lens from now on.
Wow that is real dedication for you. (y)

I used Af-C, spot or centre metering, dynamic AF mode, shutter priority mode, iso100, 3fps

Generally seemed ok with even low shutter speeds because the 18-105 is so light I didn’t suffer any shake. Had VR on

Thanks for sharing that info with us. (y)

I won't be trying to replicate it, I haven't got a suitable lens. Plus I would be poop at panning. :(

Thrown the 35mm 1.8G back on the D3300 body and I am going to try some more people shots. Now trying it on AF-C mode.

Panning is about technique and practice - stand by a road and try it, start out with 1/200, then go down to 1/125 and keep changing when you're happy with your keeper level. I've been doing it for a few years and even got a good shot at 1/6s with the x100t which focuses in about a year from pressing the button..

I probably will give it a go at some point. I did have a half hearted attempt a little while back. :)

I sold my d3100 to get a d7000, expecting a huge leap in IQ. I got none. On the upside, I got some more buttons...

My son in pretty good with his usually but I think sometimes he just uses it to shut me up . If he gets an upgrade, his little brother can have his one I guess

I did look at the D7100, but I could not and would not stretch that far.

I got the ice-cream van the other day, not exactly hurtling along lol

I got a cracking shot of a retro ice cream van, it was at the Albert Dock a few years ago. It was stationary at the time. No idea were the photo is now, probably hidden away on an old hard drive.

Been trying some people photos with the D3300 and the 35mm 1.8G lens. Been trying Back Button Focus with focusing set to AF-C. With a bit of thought, I got some pretty decent images of the missus. I have had the kit lens stuck to the D3300 for ages, but I just might keep the 35mm on just that little bit longer now. :)

the 35mm is great - i'd use S-AF for people unless they're moving quickly

Do you mean AF-S ? But keeping thumb pressed for BBF, does not keep a moving person focused. That option seems to lock focus on a certain area only, or am I wrong?

Yes, sorry - getting my m43 terms mixed. I've never used BBF so i can't help with that one

I am getting confused with settings myself, going from D3300 and X10 then onto Canon Compact. Got three Cameras I regularly. :)

Are you using continuous AF?
Yes switched it over to AF-C. Then using BBF, seem to be getting good focus on people shots now. Just a little strange getting used to all this BBF thing. I have been following the BBF thread with interest. :)

Can't understand why the camera can't focus on moving people in that case

I've been using BBF at my aunt's wedding and it's been fantastic. Glad I learnt how to use it before I came.
Thought I spotted you on the back Button focusing thread. I have been following it with interest. Pretty good once you get the hang of it. Love my D3300 and 35 mm even more now.
