Nikon D3xxx owners thread

It can go back to sleep now - I just wanted to show that an “old” camera with an average kit lens can still work fine

I have stuck my old 70-300mm film lens on my D3300. Seeing I have shaky hands, I have plonked it on a tripod. I have had this on the body before with mixed results, but going to try a little harder this time. :)

Some nice colourful images above. :)

I took one yesterday with my old manual zoom lens, through a kitchen window of a squirrel. My image is dull and flat, I don't think I will bother posting it.

well actually I like the image, you caught the squirrel in an interesting position, you blurred the background so the subject stood out, interesting bark on the tree and a lovely bushy tailed squirrel, well done

John or anyone else ,this might help understand why AFA Servo mode is not recomended
“The problem with using AF-A is that it’s impossible for the camera to know what your photographic intentions are. Let’s say you are photographing a footrace like the 100-meter dash. Before the race starts, all the runners are in their positions on the starting blocks. The camera senses that all the runners are stationary, so it automatically chooses AF-S. When the runners jump off the line and sprint down the track, the camera will be stuck in AF-S mode when it should be in AF-C mode. You’ll get one sharp photograph of the beginning of the race, and the rest of the photos will be out of focus because the AF system didn’t track the runners in motion.
If the camera starts out in AF-S mode and you need it to use AF-C mode, you have to lift your finger off the shutter-release button after the athletes start moving, then quickly press the shutter-release”
“button again to resume AF. This will cause you to miss some shots while the camera adjusts to the change.”

Does this apply even if you are using only one of the eleven focus points? I tend to use either left or right centre focus point, and just re compose. If I use active multi points, it may focus on something unintended.

@SsSsSsSsSnake ahh, that is why some of my shots are out of focus. Not being able to track focus, if subject is moving... Starting to sink in now. Thanks very much, going to make sure what focus mode am from now on, before I press that button. Thanks for the link and being so helpful. :) (y)

@SsSsSsSsSnake asked me to cross post a couple of these here..so I will. I started out with a D3100 years ago and bought my son one 2 years ago so i thought i'd give those 3fps a try at the weekend

My son has fallen out of love with his d3100 since he tried the d500. At 14...he can go whistle

Very impressive photos. :-)

Thanks John - i was quite happy, considering its an old camera with 18-105 lens which isn't the sharpest. Worked OK though ( and probably cemented the death of my e-m1 )

I am back and forth with the X10 and D3300. X10 for the handy buttons and dials, but D3300 for the superior IQ. :)

I notice camera does not BEEP in AF-C mode.
Correct so you can check the green circle lower left for confirmation, and dont forget, knowing what to do is one thing ,the other is practice practice just like piano scales.
Im going to go where a lot of birds fly over water and practice the tecniques, its not easy and this is from people whove been doing it a bit too,
Thats how im looking at my photography now ,with less self critiscm, more im seeing it as a learning curve then i dont get so down about it.
You know i finally feel ive got what i need, not what i want.
Took the 50mm 1.8 back to Jessops got the 70-300 afp vr to gomwith the 18-55 afp vr.
Thats it simple basic kit with a basic camera body thats got a great sensor, now i am going to concentrate on composition and study and learn the
Kit ive got.im not interested in purchasing any more bodies or lens from now on.
