Nikon D3xxx owners thread

Another new 3100 user! Recently upgraded from my D40 to it. Then went and bought a 35mm prime! :D

Best thing I've ever done! Highly recommend getting the 35mm! I got mine from Amazon for £136

Did you shop around other sites? I've found a shop that sells it for like £89 but I'm a firm believer that "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is"

£89 does seem really cheap for the 35mm f/1.8.

I got mine for about £140 from Jessops last summer although when I took into account the 8% cashback from Topcashback and that I used my Tesco clubcard vouchers to get Jessops vouchers I think I only paid about £6 in real money :D

It's a great lens on the D3100.

I did some serious research into it before I spent my money. £89 sounds like it's n import. I was going to get it from Jessops, but would have cost me about £8 in petrol to get to my "local" one and wasn't too fussed on when I got it so Amazon was the easiest option.

 thought I'd say hello

Bought a D3100 last friday, first DSLR I've owned

So far, I like it lots........but have loads to learn.......and thought that this may be the thread to come look for 'the knowledgeable ones' :D

Great pictures Dan........that's one evil looking bird

First shot was the bridge in Bath with an 18-70, and the second is the insanely sharp and completely underpriced 55-300VR. Both shots were edited whilst out and about with Snapseed; my favourite workflow, although there's a little bit of sharpening artefact in the 'drama' filter which I'd normally smooth out if I was working out of Lightroom. It's amazing to shoot in the morning, edit over lunch with the iPad, and then go back out shooting in the afternoon!

another couple from the 55-300 here..

Both lenses are superb and punch heavily above their weight. Plus, they're at the cheap end of the SLR lens spectrum. Two secret weapon lenses. for sure!

Great - thanks. Have just returned a D5100 to Amazon and ordered the D3100 instead.
Was going to get the 55-200 to go with the standard 18-55 but might have to save a bit more ;)

Looks the same but never heard of the first vendor.

£260 seems the going rate for the 55-300 from a proper UK dealer, less £40 cash back from Nikon.

One is 55-300 and the other is 70-300. I think the latter is supposed to be betterimage wise

Well spotted  I honestly hadn't notice that ...... I thought they were both 55-300

Think I'm just getting giddy at the thought of buying more stuff

I've had a few 70-300's and they're a great lens aswell. Faster focus, and the front element doesn't rotate during focus. But, the 70-300 is larger and heavier, and for me crucially the 55 end means I can walkaround with just the one lens, as it's pretty close to a standard fifty. Plus, the 55-300 is much less expensive, and at 300mm mine is so decent that I have no need to spend the extra.

Looking for suggestions for a suitable bag for a D3100 plus 18-55 lens and also a bag to take that kit plus a 55-200. Have ruled out the 55-300 for the time being.

Only other stuff in bag will be a spare battery, SD cards and possibly a couple of filters.

Thanks,
Al

What you recommend for the discerning novice?

I have looked at SB400, Nissin Di466, Nissin Di622, Metz 44 AF-1 and Metz 36 AF-F5

This is my first venture into this area, so I am not looking for everything ay once, but I do not want to be disappointed

I use a Domke f6 which holds camera, 18-70 and 55-300 with room to spare. I have a personal crusade against taking unnecessary kit, though, so often there's just camera and one lens in there.

Cheers for that Dan.

My new toy has arrived!

Sigma 50 - 500, it makes the d3100 look tiny!

I'm loving the lens, got trips planned to chessington, Marwell zoo and the local wildlife park to test it out.

Only 2 more toys to buy for it now.

My small bag is the lowering rookiest zoom 55aw

It can cope with my d3100, additional batteries, sb400 flash, sigma 17-70 lens on the camera, Nikon 55-300 and then wipes for the kids.

I normally stick the camera on my Q strap once I arrive and replace with a drink Goethe kids. Sling the bag over the shoulder and most days out are covered.

It depends on your needs, I have the sb400, it is tiny, is always with me, but cannot be off camera and you can't swivel it, so you can only bounce it up in horizontal use.

I will be getting an sb600, but this is when I need a big flash. I've gt the jessops flash, but I am not a fan.

Is that the jessops 360, Dale ?

Interested in your thoughts on the sigma - from memory you're local to me ? ( I'm near Woking )

Sandhurst

I love the Sigma (I also have the 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 and the 10-20). It only arrived Monday, so yet to use it in anger, it is a beast, so I am going to be looking at a monopod to help with the weight if I want to go out for the day with it.

The Jessops is only TTL when pointing directly forward (auto metering), so as soon as you bounce all the photos get blown with too much light.

Mmm..a no for the jessops then.

Thoughts on the 17-70 ? Am looking to replace my kit lens...

It is a giant step up from the kit lens! Feels better, has stabilization and obviously can open wider which is extremely useful.

Side by side photos inside compared to the kit lens were much sharper, I think the stabilization is part of this, but it was a very noticeable difference.

Thanks - will take a look. Was looking for something up to 50mm but 70mm would cover everything up to my 70-300

Hi all, another 3100 owner here. Unfortunately I dropped my 18-55 kit lens when swapping over lenses whilst holidaying in Boston (MA. not UK!!) a few months ago.
I'm in Vietnam at the minute and loving my camera again:love: (I still don't know how to use it :shake: to its full potential)
Anyway, I fancy the Sigma 18-250 as a versatile lens to replace my Nikon 18-55. Any thoughts please?
Thanks in advance.

Another D3100 newbie here. My first DSLR after hankering for one for many years.

Just got the kit lens and hardly had chance to use it other than spending hours in the house learning my way around it and playing with different settings/apatures/iso etc. So far absolutely love it and after reading this thread and numerous others online, I'm already wanting the 55-300 and the 35mm prime :) (But don't tell the missus that)

I'm actually more excited for the 10th to get the 35mm f1.8 than celebrating my birthday.

Last night I dreamed that I received my 35mm f1.8 but it had a best before date stamped right across the lens.

I didn't eat cheese before bed either!

Have now got my D3100. Do I really need to buy a Nikon USB cable or will any one do?
Tight lot not including this in the pack!

Al
