Yes
hi all , iv seen a mint nikon d3x for sale at what appears to be a reasonable price of £999.00 , and i must admit aim extremely tempted to buy it as they doesn't seem to be many of they about and i like the almost 24mgp in a robust pro heavy body , however i am aware that things may have moved on since this was built , the size and weight of it doesn't worry me although the price of nikon fx lenses would take time to put together a similar kit to what i have in m4/3 . so i suppose what im asking is what are the alternatives to this and do anyone use this body and for what specific purpose .
regarding my photography i generally shoot people and pets with a bit of landscape and occasional cycling type events . i currently use olympus bodies and pro lenses so im into olympus quite a bit and i do love certain aspects of it , however the stupid amateur in me appears to have GAS and loves the idea of a pro built full frame body , i just don't want to feel like i bought the wrong body .
so if you guys and girls could tell me im being silly or that its a amazing camera and system for the money or just any kind of insight that would be great .

The D3X is my working horse. I got other Nikons but the D3S and
D3X I will never sell. I know of no one that got rid of a single digit
Nikon. It is rare indeed as it was the most expensive camera on the
market from this maker and a natural disaster damaged the factory.

D3X is splendid for studio and controlled work but if you need it for high ISO it will not be the best choice for the money.

For many purposes you may be better off with a D800, D800E, or D810. These all have better, higher resolution sensors with improved high ISO. The D810 can also match the D3X's fps, while the D800 and D800E are a bit behind (so probably less suitable for cycling events). The D810 will generally be more expensive than that D3X, but the others now go for under £1000. With the D3X you're really paying for the pro build, but the D8x0 series are still very well constructed. Of course if you're happy with Olympus there may be no compelling reason to switch! And remember the D3X is a large, heavy camera.

Nothing wrong with being an amateur and getting pro bodies.
I am not a great photographer at all but I really enjoy owning 2 pro bodies.
A D4 and 1D MK .

Actually I think the hordes of people who get a d750 and d810 and grips are quite boring people in general and could have got a D4

Thanks for the replies guys , I suppose I need to clarify what I love about the Olympus and first and Formost for me is the wifi , it's great for getting pegs straight onto iPad or phone etc and putting on social media so I love it , not a traditional must have I know but I'm not a pro as I said and speed beats having to get on the PCs for me , however could I work around that yes I could , I put grips on all my bodies and usually wish they had more controls . I can't figure out weather a d3s / d4 ( more money I know ) would be better than the d3x for me as I sometimes need to raise Iso or shoot frames at a higher rate but nothing in the fast sport bif categories . Kodiak qc what do you choose the d3x over the d3s for if you don't mind me asking and vies versa ?
And any other points any one can give me is all welcome .

The D3S when I MUST come back with pictures where I have
no control or choice of the lighting conditions.

The D3X when I do.

Surely each has their place. If you wanted to print a landscape as large with as much resolution as possible one of the considerations (apart from going medium or large format) is MPx

Hmmm it seems I need both the in reality the d3s would probably do everything I need perfectly ( as does my Olympus ) and probably be much better in low light which I sometimes need but I also have various flash options so I'm still undecided ( which will probably be until way after the camera in question is sold )
But it's cheaper to talk than to buy and find out ......

D750 has the same 24MP as the D3X and much, much better low light capability (high shutter speed in action sports) and much later technology.

Yes I guess if you have a lens that is capable of actually showing the resolution.

Yes… but not the sturdiness of a single digit!

this is my thinking , in the grand scheme of things £1k is not a massive amount of money for something i would use a lot and to a pro who earns a living from it its relatively cheap , however id rather spend that kind of money on something that will give me years of use (this body has done 24k clicks ) and not get in my way when doing something that i really enjoy , i don't really care about massive resolution as iv never had it but i do like to buy nice quality things that work well and have some kind of longevity instead of constantly being updated , that said a nikon d5 / d850 is far out of my price range for a body because id rather buy a good older body and put quality glass on the front of it . im not rich enough to make thousand pound mistakes . also i find the huge single digit bodies really comfortable to use .

You could make the same argument for the D1 Daniel but the differences would be significant. ;)

Correct, Roger, but I know no D3's that are uncommissioned
and no D1's that are not.

It's amazing what a pro can do under any situation !
