Nikon D3s

No, I'm saying that the D3s may slightly edge the D800 with regards to high ISO performance. The D800 offers big res which is usually favourable for portraits and landscape. It also has good dynamic range and is well built (although possibly not to the standard of the D3s.)

:plus1: to that.(y)

George.

Have a look at a Nikon 800E body, between £850 - £1000 for a second hand 36mp full-frame body and well suited for both landscape and portrait photography.
I'm sure it could be used for a little sports photography but it's not it's strong point.

It's a very good well respected camera. I've never used one but i have chucked one off of a cliff with a Zeiss 21mm on the front and it survived!!

For what you want the D800 holds the trump card. More resolution and better dynamic range.

Depends if you're already invested in one system or another and how the cameras feel in your hand also.

if it helps I own a d800 and my d3s is being delivered today ......

I have researched it ( way too much as normal) I think they work well together but if I had to choose one would be the d800 for your usages....

I have owned a 5d3 and to me the d800 is a better camera all around ( I know some might not agree but just my personal preference)

do you own any glass for canon or Nikon as that would be a big deciding factor in my decision if it was me ;-)

Thanks i have 50mm for both nikon and canon and 80-200 f2.8 for nikon which is brilliant but i may upgrade to 70-200. I personally prefer Nikon however i did find that canon has bigger market for used bodies and lenses and it's relatively easy to find good priced used canon lenses as compared to nikon. I hardly buy new equipment, it's way over priced. I have some one selling to me d3s 65k auction for potentially £850 and i think d800 is more or less same price if not cheaper. Or i can grab a used 5d mk 3 between £1,000 and £1,200.

Personally can't see for your usage why you want to spend more on the canon ....
My d3s is here just charging battery

Future proofing i guess. It's always better to buy something which is capable to do more. You never know when your requirements are going to change.

But yes i agree d3s is more than capable to do most of the stuff apart from 1080p videos which i don't see myself shooting anyway.

Let me know once you have used your d3s and compared it to d800

no worries wont be today I doubt as have work to do in my "real" job lol but will do it asap ;-)

As has already been said above - the D3S may be a fine camera, but if you are shooting landscapes and people then the D800 range has to be the best option (if you are going Nikon)

The key plus points of the D3S (fps and low light ability) will not be much of a help with either of your chosen pursuits.
