Hi.

I have a Nikon d3400 and would like to buy a macro lens. I am bamboozled, as to what to buy.
I wonder if you could give me some suggestions budget around £300.

Many Thanks.

To be honest it's very difficult to get a bad macro lens but for your budget I would probably look at something like this Sigma LINK

105mm seems to be the focal length most people go for as it's long enough to keep away from most bugs but you may like shorter if your intended subject is flowers or products (watches, jewellery etc)

You can probably get a used one for a little cheaper using this page LINK or just do a search for Nikon macro.

Sharing my Personal experience of macro lenses on my D3200, I started with a used 'Nikon 85mm F3.5 G VR DX AF-S Micro' and really enjoyed it, I did find it a little short and if I made a decision today it would be 105mm. I only upgraded to the 105mm Sigma f2.8 as I wanted to move to a full frame body.

85mm for bugs and bees etc was a little short and I often had things in my hair, 105mm is better in my experience. I have also just acquired a 60mm for static objects like rings, fountain pens, etc

I am finding 'Macro' fun with so much to learn, however, be warned it can be a money pit !

Have fun !

Many years ago, I played with both the Sigma 105 f/2.8 and the Tamron 90 f/2.8 and would have been happy with either. Ended up with the Tamron since it came up on a 2nd hand shelf in town before a Sigma did. More recently, I decided I could afford and justify (to myself, with the VR for non macro use being the deciding factor) a Nikkor 105 f/2.8. Keep an eye on the 2nd hand dealers' sites and see what comes up.

Thanks for all your replies, sorry I didn't reply sooner.

I decided on the sigma 105mm and it arrived today.

I was allowed to take four photos before it has been wrapped up and put under the tree.

I was blown away by the sharpness and as nothing was thought out just a random shell on the kitchen side and some Christmas decorations, I am truly happy and can't wait for Christmas day ..

Many thanks...
