Nikon D3400 vs 5100

Hey, I'm new to photography and I'd like to start taking pictures as a hobby, not professionally. I was thinking of buying a brand new 3400 but yesterday an acquaintance offered me a used 5100. Which one do you think is best? I could save 70 bucks more or less if I get the 5100, but I don't mind paying more for the 3400 if its worth it. What do you think I should do? Thanks. (both cameras come with 18-55 lens)
 
70 bucks doesn't seem like a great saving.
Between those 2 cameras I'd probably go for the 3400.
I use a D7000 which is a great used buy, and you can get them for £250-£300
That's what I'd go for.
Depends on whether you'd need WiFi and Bluetooth etc though.
 
The D3400 doesn't have sensor cleaning as far as I know. I would go for a D3300 over the two you mention.

Just found the Sensor cleaning on my D3300, must admit I have never used it yet. When this function is used, I wonder where the dirt goes, does it stay in the body someplace?

Good question :) I think there must be some sort of trap in the system somewhere.

You have to change the dust bag every now and then...
 
Is the dust really being removed?

While the self-cleaning function does "remove" dust from the sensor, through either vibration (or shaking), it's not really removing the dust from the camera. Here is where the larger question of "where does it go" remains unanswered for the most part, and also where the usefulness of the feature sort of falls flat. Inside cameras that have this feature, there is a dust trap at the bottom of the sensor that catches dust when it is shaken off the sensor and/or sensor mirror. Simple laws of physics suggest that eventually this trap will get filled, which means it needs to be emptied, or you need to send a camera in for cleaning.
 
the alternative is simply having it constantly accumulating in the sensor itself.
 
Will let you know,i have a d3400 having had 4 or more d3300.never had them long enough for dust to be an issue so waiting to see,i was about to get the 3300 when an almost brand new 3400 came up.im sue IQ wise no noticeable diff unless you belive DXO which give it around 4 more points for sensor,maybe processor related.iso gets slighlty lower score though

A few reports where around of the D5100 suffering mirror problems,as far as i can remember the mirror became dislodged,i think i would avoid that model.
 
Thank you very much for your replies. What about the d5300? Between d3400 and d5300.. what do you think?
 
I would go for the 5300
bracketing better AF points etc think it has a swivel screen? but overall better handling
