I'm currently away on a family holiday and been using my d3300 with no problems. Yesterday out of nowhere it stopped working properly.

I have 2 issues.

1) the LCD screen doesn't turn on, I can't view settings, live view won't turn on and playback won't work. Now if I tilt the camera at different angles the screen will work. Could be a dodgy connection?

2) This one worries me more for some reason. The shutter release button isn't letting me focus before taking the shot. So it should be hold it half way to focus, then fully press to take a photo. I don't get the half way anymore. It just takes the photo! It doesn't feel right either, as in I can't feel the half way press.

This all happened as I was taking photos (i.e. Took a photo, then took another of the same subject and in-between those shots it happened), camera hasn't been dropped or anything recently. My wife did knock it out of the boot of the car a couple of months ago but surely if that was the cause it would have happened then?

I'm going to take it to a camera shop but is there anything I can try in the mean time? I've never had camera repairs done before so no idea of the kind of costs involved. Anyone know roughly how much this could cost? Hoping it might just need a new button and the screen looking at.

I don't know what might be wrong, but have you tried resettlng?

I haven't because the screen doesn't work, I believe the only way to reset these is through the menu. I can get it to work but it's very fiddly, the slightest movement will turn the screen off. Weirdly, when the kit lens is fully collapsed (I.e. in travel mode and unable to take pictures) the screen will remain on with the usual message to release the lens before taking pictures.

Sorry - I should have noted that. Have you got another lens to try? Or just remove the one you have, clean the contacts and refit. <clutchng at straws>

You can reset by pressing the green buttons at the same time for a few seconds. (assuming that the 3300 has them, all other Dxxx have them)
Edit: just checked- doesn't look like it has them - weird.

I'd try cleaning all the contacts: lens, body, battery connections, and make sure the battery is fully charged.

Then you can worry :D

There may be a reset button hidden away under the cover on the left hand side of the camera.
The D3000 had one, though it was only meant to be used on the instructions of Nikon :)

That sounds risky! Took it to a shop yesterday, will get a quote on Friday. Weirdly the first thing the bloke asked me was if I'd been to the beach. Just came back from the Isle of wight were I spent 2 days on the beach. Hoping it just needs a good clean!

I wonder how he had an idea you had been to the beach? Did the camera have sand on it? Or did he simply give the camera a wipe down, and see your beach photos?

No, I explained what was wrong with it as I took it out the bag and before he even had it in his hands he asked if I'd been to the beach! I guess we had the weather for it so would be a good guess. He couldn't see the photos as the screen doesn't work lol

Sorry for the late reply. They replaced the whole top unit of the camera (i.e. all the buttons). Cost me £126 :(

Good grief
You can get a new D3300 for £263. I take it the camera is out of warranty?
