Hi all,

I am a total beginner so apologies in advance! I decided to clean my camera/lens kit today but made things a lot worse!

When I look through the viewer (the bit you look through), I see dust/spots on the focus point markings but they do not show when I take a picture.. I tried locking the lens to clean and everything looks fine but can not work out where this spots are.

Hopefully someone understands what I am trying to explain... But I may take the camera to a shop for assistance. :(

Many Thanks

Sounds like you need to clean the viewfinder

Cheers.

I think your right but don't know how too... I will hit google to see what I can find.. Many thanks for your help

You could try a rocket blower.

I know this might be tricky for you, but that dust may well be somewhere you will never be able to shift it from.

However.

but they do not show when I take a picture..

Keep things in perspective, they're irrelevant.

Take the lens off and look inside the camera, look towards the top and you should see a glass screen. The dust is probably on that screen. As others have said the best way to clean it is to use a blower, do not try to remove it with fingers or a normal brush as that will just make it worse. When you get a blower brush simply blow all around inside the camera body with the opening facing down, leave for a while for the dust to settle and then repeat. You may have to do it a few times and it is possible that you may not get rid of all the dust but, as Phil said, don't worry about it.
One thing that does not get mentioned enough when people recommend cleaning inside the camera and cleaning the sensor is keeping the rear element of your lenses clean. If they get dust on them then it can be transferred easily into the camera when you change lenses. In my experience that is the main source of sensor dust rather than dust lurking about in the air waiting to leap into the camera as soon as you take a lens off. :)

The dust you see through the viewfinder is on the underside of the focusing screen, as Suvv says. Any other dust in/on the viewing system, lens or mirror will be so out of focus as to be invisible. Remove the lens and it's above the mirror. Use a rocket blower but don't actually touch it - the surface has a lot fine fine ridges (Fresnel rings) and they're easily damaged. It won't do any harm, but will leave a permanent mark.

Dust is a fact of life with cameras. Don't worry too much about it. Blowing stuff around inside the camera also means it's more likely to end up on the sensor, sooner or later - that's the only time you will see any dust specs on the actual photo (usually easy to remove in post-processing). All sensors need cleaning from time to time and that requires some specilist kit, but easily DIY-able.

Welcome to TP :)

Many thanks for the help... Really appreciate your assistance.
