Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm VR Lens

Anyone got one yet? Been playing with my wifes D3000 and really like how it feels and handles. Takes very good pics straight from the word go!!

I have noticed the newer D3100 but was wondering if it was a good upgrade from the D3000? I really like the D90 too but that is a bit pricey for me at the moment.

Looks like a decent camera, possibly one of the best entry level ones IF the image quality is up to scratch. Looks good on paper I would wait until the reviews are out before committing. Generally higher MP count means lower performance at High ISOs but technology moves on and maybe Nikon have achieved both - lets wait and see.

3000 . . . 3100??????????

D90 is the way to go, however, had you considered the D5000, I sold my D90 in favour of a 5000, (I need the swivel screen, cant get down and dirty any more;)). The D5000 is a wolf in sheeps clothing . . . :naughty: its a D90 in all the essentials. So it was no hardship for me, knowing this, to drop back a model, more of a side ways move to me . . .

I also bought a D5000 as it had the same sensor as the D90!!!

If you want to make a real move on in terms of 'image quality', for not a lot of money. Track down a used Nikon AF-S 18-70mm f3.5 f4.5 lens, £120-£140'ish on fleBay.

Makes a great walkabout and there are not many lenses at this level, sharp enough to be able to do this:

Thats about a 30% crop on the original, taken at 70mm. Its not a macro lens, this is not a macro shot, but its pretty good as a close up:thumbs: thats IMHO

The 18-70mm will extract the best from your 3000, works great with a D5000 and would make a perfect partner to a D90 some day? Once you have an 18-70, never part with it . . . thats IMHO too :naughty:

Blimey!! That's a bit good!!!!

Also, not much difference between the D5000 and D90 except the fact that the AF motor is in the body of the D90? Is that right or is there more to the D90 than that?

Hi Andy, thank for that comment. I have always like the shot, I get a lot of throw-outs doing this, but I get a lot of throw-outs anyway:lol:

My setup these days is minimalist, D5000/18-70 and a Sig 70-300 APO,OSM, that sits in the cupboard gathering dust. Had various other lenses, dumped the lot, no regrets. I also have a G1, 14-45 and a 45-200 which gathers dust. The G1, 14-45 combination is light, swivel screen, great as an; 'in car, have camera will travel' outfit, but it does not match up to the D5000, 18-70mm, at the final count, IMHO

The value, practical, quality set up at the moment has to be either a D5000 or D90 with a 18-105mm or as I would prefer, a used 18-70mm. Only my personal view, others will not agree:naughty:

There are a few more differences in the D90/D5000 comparison, however, nothing that affects the final IQ, and nothing IMHO that makes for a major no, no, not even a minor no, no:shrug: . . . One thing perhaps, the view finder in the 90 is a Pentaprism, in the 5000 its the cheaper Pentamirror, there is a difference in the size of the viewed image, but it does not bother me.

Most other things are at 'nit-picking' level as far as I can see, in fact I find one or two items better in their simplicity:shrug:

Thanks guys for your input. Got to admit, i am loving my wifes Nikon!! (Don't tell her!!) :D

Just looked at the 'youtube' reviews . . . poor quality presenting!!!:gag:

However this is the fist I've seen of the true functionality of the 3100, I'm impressed . . .

As with most things electronic, 'a year old is old hat' . . .

I might change my view in time????? ;) If it were me, I'd grab an 18-70mm watch and wait a while . . .

D90 is the one to consider due to the built in motor and the lack of the rear wheel for the d3000. Not sure about the d3100 though.
You don't want to buy the d3100 and regret then sell it at a lost to buy a more advance model!

There's plenty on there for £80 such a bargain! £149 new is crazy cheap!

saw that too ............but where's the stock...?...

Come down a lot since the last time I looked, they were going for £120'ish. That Jesops £149 price has probably got something to do with it?

Mine is a relic from my days when I bought a new D70s, I love it to bits.

I think I'll keep my eye on the bay!!

I would think so but without any detailed reviews it's hard to say but spec wise it does.

(probably not a great answer)

Wahey..I won the 18-70mm

Lucky git!! :D

Were you bidding too? :D

I bought (Recently) the D5000 rather than the D3100 for 2 reasons

1: The D5000 has the same sensor and the wonderful D90.

2: It was cheaper than the D3100

The thing that is most important to me is image quality and i really think the D5000 sensor is as good as it's going to get for the price. Just because a camera has more pixels does not mean it will be better. One reason i switched from canon is that i wasn't happy with the line up of crop sensors available. They all had their 'faults' in design except for the Full frame sensors.

All i need to do now is save up for some really decent glass!!! and get a job 1st

think you owe me a pint for the tip-off,,,,,,

If you hadn't of told me it would have sold for a whole pound less!! :D

Just get it packed up and posted!!!:lol::lol::lol:

I am toying between the D3100 v D5000 after having a play with my wifes D3000. Much better build quality than the canon i have. Awesome pics too!

I agree about the build quality. For low end budget DSLR's they are made very well indeed. I do prefer the Canon menu system though, much easier to use but once set up the Nikon is fine.

The only real gripe I have is that to use manual focus lenses you have to set the camera on 'M' mode and set the shutter speed without any exposure help from the camera. The canon you just set it to 'A' and it does the shutter speed for you. It does make you think a bit more but waists a few shots.

OK - to be clear here

I posted the link to a lens which was being discussed here

the Seller lives in LONDON - I live in Scotland

sorry for the confusion - in future I'll refrain

however Andy you got a good price for a good lens - so enjoy .....
