I was in two minds about the 5100 and the 7000. I asked for some advice in another thread, I had a few replies suggesting I try the D90.
I went to John Lewis and fondled all three. Ended up with the 90 and not sorry at all

My friend just had the D90 bundle from Jessops. Couple of lenses, flashgun, spare battery, lowepro Nova 180 bag, 8gb SD card all for under a £1000.....he loves it too!
Budget is around 700 theres a bundle in jessops for 700 with a uv filter, bag and memory card think thats the one i will go for but will have to wait to get lenses i think. i want to do close up macro stuff to atart with thanks guys
you might find a raynox dcr250 useful if you want to do macro on a budget. they are around £40 and it does give cracking results considering the price...but it's quite tricky to use due to the very shallow dof.
i use one on my fuji bridge camera and will use it on a DSLR if i get one one day.
I admit that I may be a tiny bit biased, being a D3100 owner but the layout of the D5100 looks very non standard Nikon to me. I love the standard Nikon menus and layout. It means that I can very quickly change any setting I want to. I could probably do this on the most Nikons too - but not the 5100.
They had to change the layout of the D5100 because of the articulated screen. The hinge is right where the buttons down the left hand side would normally be.
I was in the same situation but it was between the nikon d3100, d5000, d5100 or a canon d550. I was on quite a tight budget of around £500-600 just to get me started.
Ended up going for the nikon d3100, because it was a better spec and newer then the d5000 and from the reviews I read online the d5100 west really worth the extra money over the d3100. Am happy with my d3100 nice to handle and take photos on. And the guide menu has helped me out with this bein my first dslr....
So I would say have a look at the d3100. And spend what you have left on some decent lenses
