Hi all just wondering if anyone has any feedback regarding the Nikon D300 as i am thinking of buying one to replace my existing body

It's a great camera. I certainly loved mine. What is your current body?

is a DX camera with pro body. The camera is robust and reliable. I got one and i use it as main camera. You can't go wrong with a D300

Its a well built durable body with good AF, but if you want to shoot above ISO 800 the noise levels are quite high compared with newer and cheaper Nikons.

Thanks for that i am replacing my D90 but wanted something a lot more robust to back up my roll film camera which i still use loads

The d90 has the edge on image quality, but the d300 is better built and more robust.

The d90 isn't exactly feeble though. Why do you want to replace it?

So would you say the noise levels are higher above ISO 800 than my D90

I still have one, it was used for wildlife photography, I was happy to take it to ISO3200 when needed.

Cracking camera, nicely laid out, nice size and weight

D300 + 300 f4 AF-S + 1.7TC @f7.1 ISO3200 (click on the thumbnail)

As Martyn has just said the D300 just seems better laid out and more sturdy

The noise levels on that shot you just posted Martyn are ok could cope with that

They're basically the same sensor. I'd be highly impressed if anybody could tell the difference in noise, IQ, DR or whatever else. I quite happily used mine up to 3200, but whatever iso you're happy with your D90 at, you'll be happy at with the D300.

+1

I still have my D300 and consider myself lucky to have that quality of a camera for backup. Robust is a good word for build quality. The key to the D300, IMHO, is the same for most, if not all, cameras. Get the exposure and focus right, and mount the best glass you can afford on the front of it.

Used to have a D90, went to a D300 - brilliant move. An excellent camera - very solid, good IQ, I rarely go above 800iso as it can get a bit noisy but I think used, its one of the best value cameras ever. You will not regret it, I am only selling mine as I want a bit better ISO at times and tempted by the FF D700

How so? They have the same sensor.
