Nikon D300 Advert.....

Yes the build is for the far east market. For example UK batteries used on these cameras wouldn't show up on the camera as to how much charge is left. Conversely batteries bought from the far east wouldn't record the charge left on UK cameras.
Its ok to buy lenses but cameras- software from the far east is a definate no no.

First time I've ever heard of that, heck I'm using a fake EN-EL3e from Hong Kong on my UK D80 and it records the charge.

Yeah same here... I've heard that far east cameras are no problems, just the warranty can be void or not applicable outside that region. I'd be more worried about the authenticity of the vendor as, for 630 quid a D300 is a lot of bang for buck!

Alas, I have no experience of them so if you do buy it please make sure and update this thread for others to find!

I'm not thinking of taking the risk! Just wondered what peoples thoughts were and the pitfalls of buying from places like China.

import duty....

^^^ the above outfit promises no tax, although how they can do this is beyond me. I gotta admit, had I seen this place before I bought mine I would have deffo considered it... I'd have saved 350 quid too... thats an SB-800, an MC-36 remote, a decent spec CF card and some spare batteries!

Or just a camera *and* food this month. :)

might be marked as "repaired". This is what a number of overseas outlets do which avoids the tax. Not sure about the legality of this though!

Usually if it looks too good to be true it is.....

D3 body for 2599 euros = £2044.58

I was thinking that too:) I ended up getting my D300 from Jessops for £965, after badgering the manager and buying a tripod/head at the same time!!

This is not the case with my D40X and D80 which were both purchased from Hong Kong. Tried UK batteries on them and the charge shows as usual, and it functions as normal.

If somebody brave buys one, if worst comes to worst you could do a CC chargeback. I would volunteer but I dont have the funds  If i get them soon and nobody has been brave enough I may give it a go!

Looking throughthe answers to questions I found this which is definitely a lie as nikon don't offer a EU warranty on cameras purchased outside the EU.

Hello, I'm very interested in the Nikon D300. Is this an original Nikon, and not a fake ? Is the a tracking system on the shipping process ? Does it have warranty in Belgium ? Many thanks,

original nikon in sealed box, never opened. Tracking system in the bottom of homepage, warranty available in whole EU.

It might not be. A while ago when I purchased my D40X from Hong Kong, it came with a special Nikon EU warranty, which I didnt have to use, but when I asked Nikon about it, they said that if it had been stamped by the supplier (it had) then it was valid in the EU for repair, and that it did not have to be returned to HK for repair.

That goes against the statement on the nikon website, personally i'd sooner pay a bit extra to know i've bought a genuine camera with a 2 year warranty

Warranty for digital product is only valid in the country or region of purchase.

**WARNING**
Please be wary of dealers claiming to be able to sell or provide you an international warranty for digital equipment when you are purchasing from overseas, or from importers. THIS IS FALSE . International warranty for these products is unavailable.

that sounds like a right load of mumbo jimbo

Nikon AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8 €399 = £313

Whack 20% import duty on that and it's still less than £400.

As for what Realspeed is saying, yas, you have to watch out when buying from outside your home market but I think he's maybe got his wires crossed slightly – everyone has it happen to them at some point, so go easy on the newbie. :)

My concern would not be with the legitimacy of the price, but with the supplier!

Such cheap prices are not unusual. I am from Saudi Arabia and overthere we have no VAT / Tax etc. so things are a lot cheaper than here, and I mean A LOT. I bought a lot of my gear from there, for example, the Nikon 80-400VR goes for just under £1,000 here in UK, it was close to £575 (give or take a bit). At first I thought the local dealer in Saudi was making a mistake and I told him so, but he checked and double checked and he was right on. 50mmf1.8 £35, Sigma 70-200 HSM APO £365!

Of course, the down-side to this is the warantee issue; but seeing that I fly back home every so often that is not a real problem for me. My point is, in the OP, doesn't seem odd ... but I would be scared to buy from someone / somewhere that I can't verify for legitimacy.

It's true ,I bought 2 batteries from China for my Nikon D200, yes they do work ok BUT the chip in the battery DOES NOT allow the battery charge to be displayed on the menu screen or on the top display, it goes from showing fully charged to suddenly being discharged without any warning.

I bought my D300 last December along with the grip and an extra battery.
Also came with 70-300 VR zoom and 18-70 zoom and 4GB card.

Total from HK came to £1400.

Now even with import duty/VAT it was still a lot cheaper and the company guaranteed to refund any additional taxes.

As it happened I was charged £32.00 duty and that was it. Emailed a copy of the bill and money was in my account 24 hours later.

Yes the Warranty is HK based but they have a UK contact no to arrange collection of faulty goods and it gets to HK within 48 hours of leaving me so any turnaround is pretty quick.

For me the huge saving over the UK prices last December made this fully worthwhile.

For others it may not.

That was a good deal.

But clearly you bought from a reputable company, not the scammers in the link.

So while interesting... not sure its relevant?

LOL. I asked in jessops for a discount on the D300 if I bought it with a sb800 and a bag. He said "Yeah, we'll give you a free plastic carrier bag with that"

Import duty was mentioned earlier so was showing that it does get refunded by some HK suppliers.

Was also providing a little info re potential benefits/pitfalls.

Company was Digital Rev

Not much of a saving at DigitalRev, well for the D300 anyways.
