Yes
my main setup is a D300 with its 18-70 AF-S
but for an evening stroll - or a bike ride - it's too heavy/awkward

however i have a plastic kit 18-55 AF-S VR (from a D5000)
and a 35/1.8 AF-S DX

what second body do you think - a D90 or D3100 or.............?

thanks for any ideas...

For lightness, a D3100. If you were planning on using any non AF-S type lenses, the D90. Or a Fuji X-30!!! :P

thanks -- I'd planned to use the kit 18-55 AF-S (for lightness) so either would do

looking at eBay pricing - how about a Nikon D70 (uses D300 CF cards too)

Not particularly light and only 6MP. Fine for snaps and cheap as chips! 800 ISO is as high as you really want to go on it if that's a consideration. Will AF pretty much any Nikon fit AF lens. Still got mine!

I use a D300 now but used a D70 for a few years previously and dont think that you would notice much difference in bulk, just the fewer number of megapixels and a few oz of weight, cheap as chips to buy but I wouldnt have thought that the difference would be bike ride or evening stroll changing. Tell you what though, if weight and portability is the priority then some smartphones like the samsung galaxy S4 take amazing photos and video, just saying :)
