No
The D2x was around £4,000 when announced in June 2006 and the used price rapidly fell to around £800 when pro’s of loaded their equipment in favour of the D3.

Is it likely with the introduction of the D3x and D3s that D3 prices will fall to similar levels over the next year?

we can all hope! ... though by then, there'll be a D4 setting the new standard of what we want >_>

Not a cat in hells chance that you'll get D3's trading for less than £1,000 any time soon. I believe the current market value for a decent D3 second hand is about £2,500. It may make it's way to nearer £2,000 as the D3x and the D3s become more popular and the pro's sell on their old D3's but the fact is, the D3 is still a phenominal camera and a big set up from the D300 and D700 which go for around £700 and £1,400 respectively second hand.

If the D3 does fall to £800 then we'll all be filling our boots I reckon!

D3 prices on the Bay seem to have fallen quite a bit recently, mint ones are going for around £2,100. Once they go from current pro to amateur use I would have thought a D3 is would be worth less than a new D700.

Which, in theory, would have a negative effect on the value of used D700s....

Well I put in for one here for £2100 - even if they do fall much below that, I couldn't guarantee that there'd be any when I needed one (two?) next year...

Minty Fresh...

I've seen several going for £2100 on ebay all with low actuation counts. I don't think the D3 S/H price will start to fall until the D3s does. S/H D3 £2100 vs D3s £4000, makes the D3 a very good price, especially if you're not bothered about high ISO or video.

However, if you own a minty D3, you really should buy the D3s and sell me your old D3 :)

P.s you can still buy brand new D3 with 2 year warranty, £2799

If you know where to look the D3 can be had for £2480 new collected UK model with 2 year guaranty, bargain for new buyers, but not so good for the resale value.

So look around hard.

D3 Price forecast?

The Met Office have issued a severe D3 price warning: next week an unseasonal depression will move in from the West, increasing D3 prices, sometimes locally this may mean flooding of warehouses with unsold stock.

:D

I thought it might be interesting to update this thread periodically just to chart how the price drops. The current mean ebay price for the 7 used D3’s sold last week was £2,140.

Not far off the price of a new D700 - was going to buy a D700 but think I'll just wait for a D3 to turn up at the right money then.....

I'm going to have a D3 for sale soon (few more posts to go!), I think the price is going to go up next week, so buying this week is by far the safest option, guaranteed, honest, you only live once!

LOL - just in time for Xmas!

Surprisingly D3 prices are up a bit this week ebay mean price for the 7 used uk examples sold via auction £2,268.

Remember that VAT goes back up to 17.5% on 1st Jan.

You woun't pay VAT on a secondhand D3 on eBay.

you need to factor in that the new D3S is likely to be banned from sporting arenas because of its video capabilities which would make the D3 price stay around £2,300.

I already have seen one incident where a D90 was confiscated from the crowd because SKY have exclusive television rights

i know of several pro toggers who are buying up old D3 and "stock piling" them, im also aware of one of the major photo agencies are in communication with Nikon in an attempt to try and get them to release a D3S without Video.

My bet is that non-pros will always prefer to buy new because they'll be worried about the condition of used pro equipment.

By the time secondhand D3s have dropped in price to the level of a D700, they'll opt for buying a new D700 instead. And why not - only pros need D3s anyway, unless you're particularly keen on shooting 5x4.

The pros will be snapping up the secondhand D3s as backup bodies.

Current mean ebay price for the 6 UK examples on ebay last week has dropped to £2,167.

And canon will have the same issue with the new 1D mk4 having video.

Me thinks the new D800/900, or what ever, which is rumored for Feb may be holding prices back. Seems also that the D3S is not selling in the numbers Nikon hoped and the price of that is dropping too (£3599 from £4200 list).

Its stupid that pro bodies come with video anyway. But then its also stupid that they are banned from arenas for having video in built. Do they ban phones at arenas?!?

There's been a significant fall in used D3 prices this week, the mean price of the 8 used UK examples was £2,036 with lowest being £1,845.

is the D3 a big step up from a d700??

That's not really a surprise due to it being the same sensor. I find mine more balanced and nice to use use as it has more dedicated buttons. Apart from that the specs between then are slightly diffrent. On one you Win on the other you lose.
The only thing I wish it had was the sensor cleaner

While a D700 would be my 1st choice as a third (back-up) camera, nothing less than a D3/D3x/D3s would be acceptable for my main cameras...

My line-up for next year when I get 'out' will be 1x (possibly 2) D3, 1x D3s and 1x D3x...
Two-thirds there already...

It all depends on what you're asking of them. I expect to be hammering the living **** out of my kit most of the time, so compromise isn't an option.

Plus, I can clean my own sensors...

However I should add having just last week bought a D3s as my main camera and using my D700 as backup, I'm seriously thinking of getting a D3 as back up instead, just feels much nicer and is in fact lighter, (if you include the obligatory grip for the D700).

i agree with the feel of the camera as i have a D2xs, but imo its no big step up as the D3 has no image cleaning and i use the pop up flash as a commander, which is handy belive it r not.

imo a big step up would be D3x
Cheers

Noticed too that Grays dropped the price of all theirs.
Surprised the one that just sold on here was £2200!

Didn't realise the D2xs had a pop up flash!

is there a clever way of checking past prices on ebay?

oh and out of morbid curiosity what affect would shutter actuations have on the price as i'm presuming most people are looking to buy one in the 3-10000 range which is surely going to get harder as time goes on?
