Would I see any significant difference by trading my d3 for a d3s?
Looking for real life views from users on here.
It's mainly for family pics, maybe wildlife, although I have the d500 for that.
Thanks

i would stick with your d500 awesome piece of kit far better technology than a d3 or d3s
save yourself some cash

Agreed - D3 is the same sensor as the D700. The D3S is a step up on low light performance having owned one. A better bet if you want to head in that direction is a D750 with a grip if needed as that's even better with low light. I've moved to Sony A9's now but still think the D750 low light performance is a little ahead of these (will be for sale too next week)

@tom24 - I used my friend's D3 for a couple of days before my getting my D3S. The buffer is a lot better, it has video and it had the "Q" mode for the shutter for when I need it with wildlife. Even he said that he wants to upgrade to a D3S at some point.

I'm using mine mainly for football, with the odd bit of wildlife, but I was so impressed with it that I now have 2 x D3S.

I just wasn't happy with the high iso of the D500 that I had to use under poorly-lit floodlit footy grounds down in non-league! Very, very happy with the D3S though (y)

I already have a d3, just wondering if there was a great difference in the d3s (y)

I would probably stick with your D3 for a ten year old camera it still produces the goods and certainly isn't shabby in low light with high ISO
If your a raw shooter try NX-D if you haven't already it does a superb job with high ISO images And it's free
I have only heard good things about your D500 so I would imagine your pretty well covered ATM ?

I love the images from the d3 (as I did with the d700 that was part of my trade in for the d500) ,hence that's why I got it .
Feels great in the hands and I like the pro-spec layout of the buttons.
There is of course marked differences in what it produces compared to newer sensors but there is def' something about them that pleases my eye, don't know what, they just do.
Thanks all

It's probably the huge photo sites on the D3/700 sensor. That's what I like about the D700. There's just something "magical" about that sensor and the images it produces compared to the size of photo sites on more modern cameras.

don't see why you want an old d3s with 2009 old technology when the d500 blows it away with high iso / 4k video /fast as fcuk focusing / 5th gen processor / faster ss/s etc etc the list just goes on
unless you need wider views the ff offers thats the only advantage these old cameras have imo

I have both the D3S and the D3X. I don't think I will
ever get rid of them.

Got two D800E's, sold them. Now waiting for my two
D850's and will sell the D810's.

…but the D3S and the D3X will stay.

The IQ is a lot better on the D3S. The high ISO on the D500 isn't very good.

And the SS is the same

read this so they must have it all wrong !!

Damn right they do and maybe you did not get
the base line of it, Graham. Let's see…
  • the D3S low light performance is not beaten yet
  • the reliability of the single digits is unbeaten yet
  • higher ISO is not greater DR or TR
  • the same applies to the D3X but with twice the
    resolution
They may reinvent the screwdriver but as long as mine
works, I'll keep it… as it is unbeaten. I don't see ANY
advantage in DX format, none what so ever.

Mind you, the D850 is coming in some weeks. It can do
things my old buddies (pun intended!) can not but what
they do is not yet surpassed. I agree that newer models
have new this and that but the base line is I can always
count on my single digits. Unmistakably!

…but I wouldn't use them for wildlife… it is not their game!

Lots of people still say the D3s is still the best high ISO camera Nikon have made and it's the last of the Nikon's that doesn't have an overblown red channel so the colours are more neutral (and hence the high ISO performance) which is why so many people love the images and still use the D700/3/s.

I don't know the prices nowadays but if it wasn't going to cost to much to change I would do it.

im glad im not stuck in a time warp with rose coloured glasses :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
might be an age thing !!
i will just move along with the newer technology and sing the praises of my d500 the second best camera from nikon after the d5

whats that record playing

lets do the time warp again :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

the D3s does have better IQ than the D500

I know very little about the DX D500, but not
too surprised of the quality report on the D3S.

D3s noise is a stop better than d3/d700 but the colour fidelity at higher ISOs is much better, always found the D3 needed more work on the higher iso files than the d3s, the d3s hardly any.

Having shot with a D700, D600, D3S and D750''s I'm not sure I agree on the iso performance. It's good but the D750 iso performance and dynamic range is in another class altogether. Either that or I sold my D3S to get the D750's for nothing.

:plus1:

an amateur wedding tog stuck in the time warp may prefer the d3s if just starting his career but a seasoned wedding tog would go for the d4s / d5 / d810 or the new d850
;)
