Morning all. I'm on holiday at the the moment and the place we're staying has nice clear skies. For the last couple of nights, I've left my D3 outside taking a sequence of long exposures for star trails using cable timer.

First night I tried it, the camera was meant to take 120x 2 minute exposures. When I retrieved the camera the next morning, the battery was flat as a pancake and I'd got about 40 images, so about 80 minutes worth. I cursed myself for not charging battery properly beforehand and then left the battery doing a proper calibration and full charge before trying again last night. Last night the camera was set for 3 minute exposures, again 120 of them.

This morning I found the camera battery dead again and this time only about 25 images so about 75 minutes worth.

Is there something that I'm missing here? This battery normally goes on and on. I reckon I typically can shoot over 1000 images. I've done this sort of thing with a D810 with much smaller battery and not had any issues It's warm and dry here so don't think weather can be having much effect. So I'm wondering if using bulb mode and such long exposures is having an effect and whether I'd have been better using shorter exposures and more of them. Any advice?

How old is the battery and body? Is the battery coming to the end of its life?

They're both in advancing years. Probably 9 years old. But generally battery seems great. Once it's got some charge, I'll chuck it back in the camera and see what the condition number is.

I do a fair bit of night photography and long exposures and it kills batteries! I can shoot normally a whole wedding with batteries half dead! Go out and shoot star trails and use two full batteries

Cheers. Just never struggled like this before. Not had to give it much thought and got away with it with much smaller batteries in colder conditions. Seems strange. Maybe you're right though, maybe battery is in its last legs but normal shooting is masking the issue.
