Hello ALL !!!
I am new to dslr so need all the help i can get so please be patient. Thankyou !!!
THE STORY SO FAR !!!
A few months ago i bought a nikon f-601 with 4 x lenses for £100 which once belonged to the local police force before their upgrade. Having owned an olympus point and shoot for a number of years i thought that going back to to a film camera was the wrong move so ive just bought a nikon D200 off EBAY ( body only ).
The question is,,, can i use any of the old lenses with the new camera ???
The lenses are :-

Nikon AF Nikor 35-70mm
Vivitar Macro Zoom 70-210 mm
Sirius Macro Zoom 60-300mm
Tamron SP Telemacro BBAR MC 500mm

OR ??????????? Should i just sell the whole package ?

Thanks for looking - John :bonk::bonk:

Hi John

I would keep the Nikon lens and bin the others. You can uses older lenses but bear in mind that if they have an aperture ring they need to be locked at the smallest aperture in order for the electronics to work. secondly if you have a flash gun you may find that not all the info is transferred regarding exposure.

A lot of people seem to slag this guy off, but i find his posts very informative and very detailed.

Hope this helps

The only problem is,most sites includeing Ken Rockwell, only deal with Nikon lens, not from others maker.

You might have to a bit of research,on the others lens :)

As its second hand i was thinking that it maybe worth looking at 2nd hand lenses and in that respect thare is a lot more choice with nikons own brand.

Hi there !:help:
Thanks for the help, i think thats what i will do, bearing in mind the camera being ex police force is probably at the end of its life anyway and did not come with a charger so i'd be better off using the money on lenses.

Regards - John

If they're all Nikon mount, then you can fit them all to the D200, but there will be some compatibility issues regarding autofocus/exposure/aperture/etc with the third party lenses.
Also, when you take into consideration the crop factor (ie: multiply the focal length by 1.5) then you don't have the most practical of lens sizes.

I suggest trying them, go and shoot with each of them and then make a decision from there. Too many people who try to work out lens performance solely on words from reviews rather than actually just mounting the lens on a camera and walking out of the house...

A more detailed description of each lens would also be useful/pictures, as lenses often had different iterations across the years. The D200 is a good camera in terms of older lens compatibility though, so despite some of the comments above, you might actually be okay - once we know exactly what lens version each of them is.

I suggest trying them ...
Why has it taken this many posts to suggest that? You're in possession of the camera and the lenses aren't you? If they work, they work; not like theyre going to gradually fail or beat each other up ;)

After all, Nikon mount is usually quite good. The only lenses you should NOT mount to a modern DSLR, or a film camera that doesn't support them, is pre-AI lenses (where the rabbit ears have no holes in them). These can cause damage to your camera.

But I'm reasonably sure none of the aforementioned lenses are pre-AI, so go and try them!

Guess thats what i was asking, i've just got the camera and don't want to kill it with an incompatable lens.... yes i will now try them in time but need to learn the camera first.
In a nutshell, " IVE GOT ALL THE GEAR AND NO IDEA "

Thanks - John
