Hi,
It's a long time since I've posted here! At the moment i have a D3000 but feel quite limited by it's features mainly it not having a built in motor so having to buy AF-S glass. As i'm only a hobbyist and make no money it's hard to justify large sums on glass especially as i'm not the most flush person around. Now having looked around i feel something like a D200 would be perfect for me, the specs of the camera are ok and it has a good amount of features, the only downside i can see is it has a smaller screen but that won't bother me a great deal.

What i'm asking though, is the D200 too old ? Would i find if i got one that theres a high likely hood of it failing soon in the near future. Does the AF ect still perform as well as say a D3100 ? Is there a better choice for this sort of price bracket ?

Many Thanks

Not too old depending on shutter clicks, however that particular model I found was heavy on the batteries, so went for the D300 instead. The D300 is a far better camera.

Thats interesting to know, thanks! As i say the problem though i have is cost, will have a look at the 300 though.

If price is a concern and you can't/don't want to stretch to a D300, I'd look at a second-hand D90.

Hi

I'd get the d300 - approx 400-500ukp?

Has loads of features (and a big book to try and remember them all) has the motor and 12mp gives a decent picture.

Link in the siggy to flickr - the lenses on the links below are sets on there so I can keep track of which lenses I use the most...

:)

Well worth it !

I absolutely loved my D200, and don't think it is too old / not worth it even now. It was not too good at higher ISO, but was a nice solidly built camera and a nice size too. A D300 is again better in just about all respects but likely to be more expensive.

Ahh now i didn't even think about a D90, i think this could be the perfect choice. Thanks!

I agree the D300 would be nice but as i say Photography is only a hobby for me, the prices i have been looking at for the D300 seem to be £350 + which at this time is a little bit to much for me.

I have seen a d90 on a fb page for about £200!!

Could you pm me a link if its still available ?

Saw a D300 the other day on another forum I frequent for £275, if I didn't have all Canon gear might have given it a try for that price, think it is still for sale

Fuji S5... D200 body with better guts, often cheaper than d200 too.

The D200 is still relevant today, great build, mine still earns. Wouldn't push the iso too high though!

800 at the very highest and even that's pushing it! OK, any picture is better than none but anything at 800 or above needs some serious NR and (IMO) benefits from a conversion to B&W where the noise sort of simulates graininess.

While my D200 was an upgrade from my first DSLR (a D70), when I had to sell one to help finance the D700, I kept the D70. Partly sentimentality but mainly since the extra it was worth over the D70 in financial terms was significantly more than the marginal upgrade in IQ that the D200 offered. Personally, if I wanted a cheapish Dx body, I would look at something other than the D200 but my budget may be more than the OP's willing to spend. AFAIK, the person who bought the D200 is still happy with it and it still works - the D70 certainly still works, although it gets little use these days!

If the main reason for the change is to get an in body AF motor and extra pixels are of secondary importance, I would advise a D70(s?) and save for a while for a significant upgrade (I reckon D7000/71000 bodies will be within reach before too long).

I love my D200 but the D300 is a lot, lot better. As another poster said, I would go D90 over D200.
