Just got one and I have no idea how to use it!

Oh the lens is the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S DX Lens but the batteries have gone dead and I'm not getting the charger until tomorrow :'(

Cool thanks. Downloading now. This is soooo different from my Canon!

Welcome to the 'Darkside':suspect:

God, I never expected to hear myself saying that!!

The D1X has got arguably Nikon's best ever AF system, and awesome film like IQ.

The D1X and D100 have got lovely IQ, they underexpose a bit but you get lovely deep rich colours and lovely JPEG results - a great era for Nikon before the dip, then resurgence - arguably the newer Nikon's are a bit homogenized and sterile.

Enjoy :)

lol, he's looking to sell it and I've only got it on loan, the lens that is. Thing is, I've got an idential spec lens for my Canon and am looking at the telephoto area of things. The lens is only a month old I think and boy is it heavy! lol

Lol...I know, I had a shot of one yesterday () now I'm looking for things to sell to raise the funds

Must resist

Hi

I bought a Nikon D1x when they first came out - it was over £4000. Sadly for me the shutter went within a week and it took Nikon 5 months to repair. I then found that it was difficult to get a good skin tone, they were well known for magenta casts.

However other than that it was a stunning camera and lovely to hold and use.

Is there anywhere on here which details what Nikon lenses are compatible with which camera etc? It's all this Lens focus motor / in body motor that's confusing me! So far I've picked up that DX is for cropped sensors.

EDIT: Basically what I'm asking is will the D1X be able to use any lens and doesn't require the focus motor to be in the lens? :)

Essentially, the D1X can use all Nikon lenses, AI onwards, which in essence means just about everyone out there, as the pre AI lenses are very rare, and you probably wouldn't want to se one anyway.

All lenses, AI onwards will work in Aperture priority, and in Manual, and you'll still be able to use the meter.

Here is a reasonably complete list:

D-type AF Nikkor: All functions possible

D-type Manual-Focus Nikkor: All functions except autofocus possible

AF Nikkor other than D-type: All functions except 3D Color Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash for D1-series possible

AI-P Nikkor: All functions except 3D Color Matrix Metering, 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash for D1 and auto-focus possible

Non-CPU (AI, AIS, and AI converted) Usable in [A] or [M] mode Center-Weighted or Spot Metering; Electronic Rangefinder usable with lens with maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster

The Canon 17-55 is not like the Nikon 17-55 ;)

Nah, it's the Sigma F2.8 I've got and although not the same quality it's still good for me and don't want to start doubling up on lenses. I could use the Canon for wide stuff and get a telephoto for the Nikon and then simply hop between them until I get more lenses.

Still looking to get the Canon 55-250 IS but not 100% sure anymore.

There is not a lot wrong with the Sigma 2.8 - I've seen a few argue that it's better than the Nikon original!!

I've often thought that the 'high end' third party lenses are up there with the best OE lenses.

Batteries charged and I'm really starting to like this camera! Did some test shots and shockingly the Canon seems a lot better but it was bad subject matter. Will have a better play tomorrow! :D

Oh, the battery dropped by half after five shots  I read somewhere that a firmware update can fix this but have discharged the batteries first for a full recharge. Probably need new batteries...cha ching. This converting to Nikon malarkey is gonna cost me...I can sense it hehe. Need a new bag to hold two cameras now grrrrr

As you've probably noticed, the D1x uses old NiMh batteries rather than the newer Li-Ion type, best to get yourself a spare..........or five ;)

If you decide you don't like the D1X Gman, PM me :)

Cool cheers! Wondering if I can get a Li-Ion compatibile one?.....hehe Will scour ebay but £5 for postage! I sent my 20mm F1.8 prime in the post for less than that and it was a heavy bit of glass! :)
