Guys,

Since changing from my very dependable D40 to the D90 I’ve had some very strange and unpredictable results from the D90 especially using flash. What I’m seeing on many pictures is underexposed results. To allow the camera to get this right I’ve even used P mode which was 99/100 on the D40 very acceptable.

I thought at first the issue was a metering problem but is occurs on centre weighted or matrix.

I then worried my sigma 28-70 f2.8 was the problem but again it has happened on other lenses. Today I think I may have stumbled across the problem - D-Lighting…..by default it’s set to auto so I just left it at that but by using the in camera PP in the playback menu I saw that by applying ‘normal’ D-lighting to the image all of a sudden the picture became properly exposed ! Here’s the example :-

P Mode bounced flash, Auto D-light, Matrix Metering….underexposed result (quite poor to be honest)

If I apply ‘Normal’ D-Light to the image via the in camera PP option all of a sudden the result is more realistic to the light in the room (it was a bright room with plenty of natural light)

So the problem appears to be with ‘Auto’ D-lighting which is really confusing the exposure at times. I’m going to try using ‘Normal’ D-lighting and possibly turn it off all together in the hope this might rid me of this annoying gremlin.

Anyone else experienced anything similar or know what’s happening here ??

Does the D90 need a firmware fix ??

TIA,
Mike.

You mentioned you used bounce flash? What flash was it? One thing I can think of is probably you were in TTL-BL mode rather than TTL mode if you are using a Nikon flash. Just a suggestion.

Personally I don't think the D-Lighting should mess with the flash exposure somehow.

The flash is the SB-400 so no control on settings on the flash itself, on camera external flash just set to TTL.

Any ideas anyone...i'm really losing my confidence in the D90 and with some important shoots coming up i'm considering playing it safe with the D40.

Turn off D-Lighting.

Having it on for flash makes no sense.

Unless you are shooting for JPEG output, its a pointless setting and should be turned Off in any case.
