Nikon 'D' Lenses and New DSLRs (formally 1.4TC Problem)

That's exactly what they told my son who was having exactly the same issues ,he had the same lens a 1.4 Mk3 tc and nothing but trouble that was with a d7200 and a d810 ? ( the latest one) after it going backwards and forwards to Nikon service centres 3 times or more over the course of a year with no improvement ,he saw the light and changed back to canon

The mk3 TC isn't compatible with that lens though and it's very clear from the Nikon Compatibility charts that it won't work. The mk2 that I'm using definitely is so it's not really the same situation.

I've spoken to greys of Westminster and they are happy for me to come and test my body and TC on their copy of the exact same lens, so that will rule the lens out (or not). I have a TC kindly sent from somebody on here which I'll test when I get home in an hour. After that I just need to find a d7200 local to rule that out. If I rule them all out independently then it's clearly the combination that's the problem for some reason. At that point I'll consider what to do.

That's that then. Took my body and my TC to greys and tried it on their 500 ED II and it works. I can't make it show the fault after 10 minutes of trying. This means it must be the lens (unless I was unlucky and within 10 mins it didn't show the error but still would have after longer). Spoken to ffordes and we'll go from here. But as far as it looks, the combo does work together which is a relief.

I guess this would add confirmation to the 'clicking' you heard from the lens ... I am sure Ffordes will see you right :)

Yeah they're collecting it tomorrow. Just means I'm without a lens again for however long. I offered to send them my body and TC but they said lens and TC but they don't need the body, so I hope they have a d7200 and it shows the problem for them!

Whatever it shows for them, it's failing to work for you :)

Well this is very interesting. I got a reply on dpreview and it's encouraging and would explain the issues others have mentioned on this thread:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/56123904

The thing I find annoying is this sentence:
" I then contacted a Nikon Certified camera repair place who told me that some of the older D lenses would need to be re-chipped in order to work with some of the newer Nikon DSLRs. Nikon had an internal advisory about this, and that is why they knew about the problem."

Nikon clearly know about this issue yet the person I spoke to said they had never heard of it and had no reports of it. Lots of people in other places I've found since have spoken to Nikon and been told they didn't know. If they've made a mistake they should at least admit it...

Very interesting Chris ... having spoken with Nikon UK on this matter with my 400 f2.8, I also got the 'we know nothing about it' treatment and was never offered a repair option by anyone. Very, very annoying!
Can Ffordes get it done for you?

Additionally maybe amend your thread title to be more specific for a warning to others?

Amended thread title :)

I'm hoping ffordes will do it. They're picking it up today. I'm worried they'll say that they won't fix it either because it's not a fault as such since the lens DOES work (even with a TC with older bodies) or because they can't justify a £200 repair (price I've seen mentioned on that thread roughly) and still let me have it for the price I got it. They'd lose money I assume. Fingers crossed!

@dragonfly the above will be of interest to you if you still have the problem (can't remember if you said you changed lens)

Incidentally, I find a lot of these photographic sites searches rubbish! I typed 'nikon teleconvertor' and even just 'teleconvertor' and it said nothing found.

Spell "Teleconverter" properly and you may find that it brings something out?

Hope they can replace the lens for you.

It is times like these where people are dubious about buying second-hand, luckily they are few and far between though.

The git who sold Ffordes the lens though, probably had exactly the same problem!

Hope you get it resolved, Chris. As I mentioned previously, it's nothing to do with clean contacts, but rather to do with hardware/software compatibility. I no longer have this lens but I hope your solution may help others in the future - assuming it works. Fingers crossed.

Wow I've been spelling it wrong all this time :S No wonder when I'm searching on sites I often find no results...Doh!!!!

Doubt they'll replace the lens, I'll be happy if they just fix it or send it to Nikon for the DC-DC Circuit to be changed.

Thanks. I didn't mention cleaning contacts...the link is about the circuitry needing to be changed within the lens. I guess it's no longer relevant to you but still as you say hopefully helps somebody in future.

I was not referring to the links you've posted, Chris, but the speculations earlier in this thread that suggested poor contacts might be to blame.
