Morning All

Advice needed on a Nikon D800 I am thinking of upgrading from D700 to D800 any thoughts pros and cons please

I had a D700 (superb camera) and then had a D800E. The D800 / E has amazing resolution. Some folk still fall into the trap of thinking that such high resolution is only needed for big prints. Wrong - it permits you to make quite large crops and still retain a lot of detail. That is very useful.

I was not especially too impressed with the D800 autofocus system. I had a higher autofocus success rate with the D700. I moved to a D810 primarily to get a better autofocus system (it has the same system as the D4S).

You may not shoot subjects that make great demands on autofocus (e.g. if you purely shoot subjects that are stationery) and that could colour your choice.

If you are going to move from the D700 then consider the D810 and check it out.
 
Im currently looking to upgrade and considered D750/800/810. It all comes down to budget at the end of the day but I plan on hanging it out until I can afford the D810. The way I see it the 800 although an amazing camera is some years old now which suffered from a few niggles and was let down by frame rate, ISO capabilities and auto-focusing.
For me upgrading from a D7000 im sure I wouldn't even notice these things and it would offer a staggering upgrade, but id rather stretch myself to buy the best I can to future proof the investment. If I opt for the 810 which was released early 2015 it will see me good for 6+ years where as the D800 is nearly 4 years old now.

don't get me wrong if I would be MORE than chuffed to own an 800, but as I said if I buy bodies to last a long time. My D7000 is 4.5-5yrs old now and if I wasn't changing to FX would be more than happy to stick with it.

I would do that. Given the rate at which Nikon have been bringing out new models these last few years it may not be very long before the D810 is superceded and when that happens the 2nd hand price of previous models will drop.
 
Thank you all for the comments for and against and as you say Ben it always comes down to budget and I have I think changed my mind to the 800e simply because I cannot afford the 810 so tomorrow morning I am off to do just that so once again gents thank you for advice and onwards and upwards to better photography

Terry good luck with your choice Iam sure you will be happy with the d800e :)

Good luck shopping....The D800E is an amazing camera!
 
i recently went from a D700 to a D810. The biggest difference / improvement that i've noticed (other than the MP/file size) is the ability to recover shadow details. I'm sure it's just the more modern sensor but it's very noticable (and useful). Enjoy the D800E
 
I am very happy with my Nikon D800 and say get one but you do need good quality lenses as well. My walk around lens is the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f2.8 ED N lens and usually found on that camera of mine. My other lens is the Nikon D300 I use as a backup

I have a D800 and a D810 tbh other than the D810 just feeling like a quicker camera to use I can't really tell any difference between them. The first D800 I felt had issues with the af but it was never really that big of a problem and the second one has been great.
