Nikon Coolscan IV

Could some kind person please show me where I may find a drawing, photograph or plan showing the optical system in this scanner. Failing that, is there anyone who knows if it is possible to place a diffuser between the light source and the negative being scanned? The negatives are held in the SA 21 holder. I have tried searching via Google without any success. Thank you in advance.

I've not got access to the coolscan any more, but I did follow the instructions for cleaning it here: http://www.sebsgarage.com/2005/11/cleaning-nikon-coolscan-iv-ed-ls-40-film-scanner/
You can see some of the images of the optical path.

Can I ask why you need the diffusor? The contrast would be better with a line scanned source

Thank you, Brian for that reference it might help. I am interested to see if using s diffuse light source would help to reduce the amount of 'noise' that seems to arise from scans of old colour negatives.

The diffuse source will most likely make it worse as well as reducing the contrast and colour fidelity of the scan.
