Hi
Someone gifted me a Nikon Coolpix 510 lately for sports photography, the standard lens wasn't great for far away sport.
I managed to get a hold of a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG (Canon AF) for very little - but it doesn't fit the lens of the Nikon.
Can anyone suggest an adapter that would allow these to fit? Or are the just simply non compatible - which in that case, can someone reccommend what lenses would be needed to fit this Nikon camera (albeit I may need an adaptor for it)

Thanks
J

Hi and welcome to TP

I had to look the Coolpix 510 up and realised it is a 'bridge' camera i.e. not a compact and not a dSLR.

Having said that it does have a built in zoom lens with an equivalent range of 24-1000mm, that long end is quite something for a bridge camera and I am surprised that you say it is not adequate for "far away sport"!

Even many pro sports photographers are not using as long a lens as 1000mm, so just what are you photographing and expecting to achieve???

The Sigma lens that you bought is designed for use on a Canon dSLR and even if you had gotten the Nikon fit version of that Sigma it is 100% incompatible with your CoolPix 510. The lens on the 510 is not removable or interchangeable

There are AFAIK some 'convertor lens' that may see described as " "Macro" or "Tele" convertor lenses" that can be used with some built-in lens camera but they typically give an inferior picture quality primarily because they are optically poor and not specifically designed for use with the lens it will attach to!

Sorry if the above is not what you wanted to hear.

PS as it was gifted to you here is a link to review when it was introduced https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-coolpix-p510 back in 2012, to tell more about it.

PPS here is the Nikon website page where you can download a pdf copy of the user manual https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/55/COOLPIX_P510.html

Hi
Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. It was really helpful and I thought as much.

I am hoping to photograph football matches, when I tried the camera previously I found that it was difficult to capture the images at the right time, many were blurry. Night time the camera was very poor.

Does this mean that I require a dSLR camera? I am very much a beginner, if that, when it comes to photography. Can you recommend a good starter Canon dSLR that this particular sigma lens would fit? Is there a particular model/diameter I am looking for.

All this help is greatly appreciated

*Just to add, I've come across: Canon EOS 5D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)
I see that my lens is an AF does this mean it won't attach to a certain Canon camera (EF)?

No, it simply means that the lens has auto-focus. As it's a DG lens I believe it should fit all Canon DSLRs but I'm not a Canon expert.
However, wanting to photograph football at night is a bit specialised and that Sigma lens has a small maximum aperture so is not ideal for the job.
The original Canon 5D was released in 2005 - technology and performance has moved on a lot since then.

@Jonesy90

You may not be surprised but what you are asking has come up before in various 'forms'.

So a little reading for might be these posts/threads in the Beginners sub fora. I searched using "Football" as the search criteria here https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/s...t&c[child_nodes]=1&c[nodes][0]=73&o=relevance

You might find some insights that will clue you in........and that will undoubtedly raise some much specific questions ;)

PS before you spend anymore money.......do post what your budget is,.........but be prepared to be told your budget may be too limited!
