Has anybody used a 1.4 or 1.7 TC with a Nikkor 70-300mm zoom (in my case on a 300s)?

I have tried to decipher the Nikon compatability chart and I THINK mechanically it is ok!

Just wondered what any users think.

Basically is it worth it? I may also use it on a 2.8 105mm Nikkor Macro.

Used mainly for wildlife

Cheers for any thoughts comments.

They don't fit (unless you have them modified) but you can use the Kenko ones.

Having said that, don't expect the quality you see from them on primes.

dont do it kenko will fit

its pointless though

You can just about use them, but you need either very bright sunlight or very high iso, or both. The viewfinder image becomes rather dark too, making it an exercise in futility.

The Nikon ones don't fit but the kenko 1.4x one does.

I wouldn't say pointless - yes IQ does suffer and the af is quite slow if you don't have decent light but results like this are quite achievable:shrug:

For some reason I misread the Technical data on the Nikon Spreadsheet!! You are (of course) correct. Can't use em on the 70-300mm. But can use it on my 2.8 AF-S 105mm prime ( but that would give me nothing that my 70-300 would give me at the end of the day).

I realise there are compromises that affect quality and the reduction in F stop etc. And I would only use it where all other options fail ie can't get close enough!!

So I was trawling for opinions and experiences!

Kenko's are cheaper than Nikons anyway!!

That shot looks okay to me ..and on the same camera (I use a 300s). I would only risk the converter in good light anyway. Just there are times when you are screaming for the subject (usually a titchy bird!) to fill your viewfinder a bit more!
