I use a SB900 with shoot through off camera and am about to double up to two SB900. Using pop up flash in commander mode to get TTL for speed, as using this setup at weddings.
Was thinking of extending this for first dance but am worried that the two off camera flashes react to guests flashes going off.
Are the SB900's pure slave and will react to any burst of light or are they specifically looking for an IR / Radio pulse from the pop up commander ?

Many thanks
Kevin

Ermm, are they in TTL or SLAVE mode?
TTL/CLS, not a problem as a load of almost invisible pre flashes are the communication between camera and flash and I doubt any other persons camera will trig them, might get a odd fluke where some one elses camera fools the pre flash metering I would think but that would be about it, if they are set to SU4 (slave mode) any flash will set them off.

Think you need to go and have a little play about too, learn them better so it is at least more instinctive at the point of use.

They will be in TTL mode, therefore should be quite safe from other flashes. SU4 being pure optical slave. Only ever used off camera with cheap triggers therefore full manual but for first dance tink the auto ttl option much safer ! Of course will be playing before implementing at a wedding.

I find that the CLS thing gets in the way big time for these shots. I prefer to just set them to the power I want and then ride the manual controls on the camera to control the shot, which you can do quite instinctively and quickly

Will work fine unless there's a smart guest with a Nikon.

Wouldn't take me long to figure out how to "steal" your lights....

Re stealing lights, that is a good point, can always point an optical slave back at him :-)

Wouldn't help - first metering flash would trip the slave, rest of their CLS pulses would fire the lights and everything would work. Odds are the mirror would be up too so they wouldn't even get blinded.

Old SB28 in the bag, set to ignore pre flashes !
Will play with manual and TTL cls and see which I feel more comfortable.
