What is the benefit, if any, of using an SU-800 compared with the built-in commander on say, a D90, or D700?

The SU800 gives you three groups instead of two, a greater range, the flexibility to mount it on a ttl cable and you don't need to keep going into the camera menu every time you want to change the settings...

Thanks.

Do those groups have to fire together, or can any delay be set between them?

Only two groups?

I waited a long time for canon to catch up and to include it in their built in guns, and they offer three (at least on the 7d).

Yes, my D90 and D700 has only two.

As for the SU800, I read that in test mode it fires A / B / C in sequence. Anyone have an idea how quickly that sequence runs?

Do you think it would be possible to connect a flash cord with a push button trigger to an SU800, and trigger that by itself during a long-ish exposure? Would one SU800 interfere with another (does each unit have a distinct frequency/code)?

I dare say you could just press the test button

You can change the channel/frequency (four available) of the SU800 at the touch of a button...
