Nikon CEO confirms they are working on a pro mirrorless system.

Does that mean another name change to Nik_guru is likely?

It would have to be a stellar body, I am not sure where Nikon are going to go with their mirrorless offering... perhaps just remove the mirror system in their current bodies and replace with EVF, keep everything else the same?

Hopefully, this means that Nikon has waited for the mirrorless market to mature, letting the other companies overcome the teething issues with mirrorless. Would be a smart move, if this is the case, but very difficult to judge how Nikon are reacting especially to Sony who are becoming game changers.

it is not smart to lose mindshare

especially given nikon's recent QC issues. I would expect them to relearn all the errors that their competitors already learned.

Nikon is a very strong brand, I am expecting something BIG from them and perhaps Sony's domination of the full-frame mirrorless market will finally see some real competition.
Exciting times a head.

As we've seen with Canon mirrorless, the camera and lenses don't have to be state of the art to sell and sell well. The badge alone could see them at number one in the mirrorless sales chart, even if the product is relatively poor, as with Canon.

True, Nikon do have a great lens line up, so are in a very strong position if they release a compatible mirrorless body like a Nikon D5m (mirrorless), the Pro's would be all over it if it came remotely close to the Sony A9 feature set. Nikon's 3D tracking system is already at a point where it probably doesn't need much improving.

Does this mean we might actually see decent liveview at last in future DSLRs?

Interesting, but also a bit meaningless without at least a little meat on these very bare bones of information. And it's kinda like, of course they are. Or even if they weren't, this is still exactly what the CEO would say in answer to a direct question. Anything else would be suicide.

Both Nikon and Canon are very well positioned for this, and IMHO the time seems about right now. But is Nikon going to do this with Sony sensors? In which case, Sony will hold all the cards. Canon makes its own sensors and in some areas appear to have advantages over Sony for mirrorless applications which, ultimately, is all about getting rid of the mechanical shutter.

Lets hope for a great EVF AND all the other good qualities of the existing range.

They end up releasing smaller, lighter, full frame mirrorless body that uses existing pro nikon glass. Unless they have some magic and reproduce a set of new lens for mirrorless system that is smaller, lighter and still works for full frame.

You will end up have a big heavy lens attached to your smaller, lighter body. or you still have to sell everything and buy new lens (if they release any for mirrorless system).

Looks like they following what Sony is doing.

I don't see how they can make smaller lenses, they still have to cover the FF image circle therefore require the same amount of glass.

Exactly, thats why I said unless they have some magic formular. Pointless in my opinion if you still have to carry the big glass. The good thing are, one less problem without the mirror and if they use EVF, you can see what you get before pressing the shutter.

I wouldn't say it's pointless, far from it as some people don't have to have a big fat 70-200mm f2.8. If you choose the sort of lenses I like, primes in the 24-85mm range, you can have a smaller camera and lens set up and suffer the 70-200mm f2.8 only when you absolutely have to.

I held and shot a few shots with a 5D and L zoom at the weekend. I'd forgotten what a lump this combination was but replace the big fat 5D with an even slightly smaller Nikon mirrorless and fit a compact prime instead of the L zoom lump and it'd be a lot more compact.

I thought we were all well over the mirrorless = must be small thing? It was a USP at the start, particularly as Micro Four Thirds blazed the mirrorless trail early, but it's far from the best reason to go mirrorless now in my opinion.

Eventually all electronic-systems are going to be fundamentally 'better' in almost every way to a mechanical DSLR, it's inevitable and in some cases has arguably already started to happen. That some systems can be small is a neat side effect but one that has made the concept so successful, particularly in Asia and Europe.

Personally, I don't see any real point to mirrorless... except getting rid of mirror slap/noise which is nice.
Now, if we could get fully global shutters that would be a different matter.

I want loads of amazing stuff for a grand, will Nikon deliver? will they s***e!!

Full frame (well 35mm not proper full frame), about 3-4k sterling, lenses will be new at upwards of 1100 each.

I like the noise, and the optical viewfinder too ;)

Not having to faff on with MA would be enough in itself but add to that never taking a shot and wondering what it'll be like, being able to see your exposure and dof, being able to af anywhere in the frame and also manually focus with ease, being able to see the whole frame and not seeing crud and even critters walking around in your vf and I'd say mirrorless is a godsend :D

Who says they will do anything to the size of their bodies?
As this is apparently for the pro market they won't want to force those guys to change lenses. They could just put a mirror less system inside an existing body so as to keep lens attachments the same.

I don't think there's really ever been a time my metering has been so wildly off id need to know my exposure, I also have a built in meter. I have a dof preview not that I use it and I also have live view with the exposure preview to check things like that if I needed to. Seeing the whole frame? That's why you get a 100% viewfinder, crud in ovf? Only in the ancient 5d, that's your comparison camera isn't it? Not a modern full frame.

I prefer a clear view over a telly screen tbh, evf is useful for beginners though and af anywhere in frame is great but only more recently with outer phase pixels. Focus aids are also cool for slow manual work.

Advantages to both types and evfs are getting better, id like to try the sl evf.

Let see what nikon will come up with. Like someone mention, it may well be have a body like D750m or D5m ...... same body with mirrorless instead.

Perhaps, but Sony probably make more money on the sensors they sell to Nikon, than they do on the cameras branded as Sony...
Sony Imaging don’t have that much sway over Sony Semiconductor Corporation...

of course, then later we take the picture and view it on a telly screen anyway :p (not to mention at 200% too :D )

But while I'm capturing it my eyes haven't got a tv strapped to them. There is no refresh difference, there is no noise, there are no dynamic range differences, no pixels, colour difference, just the scene exactly as I prefer to see it.

It's clear some DSLR users still don't 'get' mirrorless.:p

IMHO 'pro' mirrorless doesn't need to be FF; why we are still referring to that particular line in the sand as 'full frame' baffles me.

There are loads of advantages to a mirrorless system, and using fast full frame lenses makes them less fun.

An APSC body with fast lenses designed for the format is a much nicer proposition than FF (M43 is lovely but a bit too far for ultimate IQ)

except what you see isn't what's exactly captured
besides don't need a peephole to see the scene with one eye, I've got two great god given eyes for that purpose :P

But what I see during the process isn't digital.... you're looking through a digital peephole.

Except when you're looking through the evf you're looking through a screen with the already mentioned issues or benefits.

At the beginning of mirrorless, the marketing, seemed to be all about the smaller size and weight. I think now, that this particular market has matured, it's clear that both those things are not that important. Personally, was never interested, in a smaller body to attach to large lens (don't worry, I'm not dismissing, the much smaller wide angle primes).

I now think, mirrorless is at a point, that Nikon could really make a serious impact. Take all the advantages of mirrorless, put them in a body (maybe slightly smaller than current dslr), but still have access to all that wonderful glass. Now there's something that would make me take notice, if properly implemented, of course.

Twist mate, I could reply point by point but why should I bother? OK, you've talked me into it :D

You never shoot and chimp? You're one in a million for yet another reason :D

You have a 100% VF? You're one of a tiny percentage of DSLR owners.

If you think you only get crud in ancient VF's you need to go to Specsavers. And no, I've used more modern DSLR's than my 5D and guess what... crud in the VF. Do a poll of owners of lets be kind and say year old DSLR's if you don't believe it or take another look through yours once you're wearing your Specsavers supplied correctives.

Oh yes and you're comment about EVF's being for beginners is provocative internet drivel even for you.

Is the same article as was reported a couple of days ago? That particular article was translated by a poster called Nakayamahanzaemon on Nikon rumors as this:

Here is my translation:

What are you going to do with camera business?

There is every possibility in structural reform. On the product side, we should compete in the mid-range and high-end DSLR. We aim to be the top in a genre, and earn profits even if sales are down. For a smartphone generation, we put out a very Nikon-ish mirrorless camera which is superior to rivals in quality. Making the best use of industrial lens technology, we would like to overwhelm them in lens quality. On the other hand, we need fun. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a project like “an easy-to-use DSLR for girls”?
