Nikon Capture NX-D beginner's help, advice, chat.

OK, I've installed it to Windows 10, and I'm faced with an immediate problem ... it's supposed to show thumbnails along the bottom but nothing! I click on Folder on the top toolbar, select (My) Pictures, but all the files in Pictures are in folders so no thumbnails. If I drag a pic out of a folder then that shows as a thumbnail in NXD. But I would like to see my folders in NXD. .... hope this makes sense.

Further to this, on the top toolbar there's a button "NEF/NRW+JPEG" but I can't see a way of selecting NEF files only. My reason for installing NXD was to convert RAW, I don't think I want to use it for JPEGS, I've got better editors for that.

Also I can't find a way to paste an image into NXD from another viewer/editor.

These Nikon apps are a bit half-baked, in fact you may be lucky to get them to work at all. Personally I'd consider other options. It'll make life simpler.

Try clicking on Window and seeing if Folders has a tick by it. If not click on it and your folder structure should appear on the Left, you can then click on a folder to see thumbnails of its contents. You will need to select the thumbnail or combination icon to see them.
I don't know about viewing only NEF files. I do not have a NEF/NEF+JPEG button on my top bar, only an option in preferences, that is just to make NX-D show both images if you shoot NEF+JPEG.
If you have pictures in another viewer / editor you need them in a folder on your computer for NX-D to view them.

Since they introduced NX-D and withdrew NX2, I really wouldnt bother.

There are far better RAW converters out there, both free and paid for.

and plenty of others.

Most paid for ones have a free trial period.

Thank you Ian, nice list. I've always loved the name Raw Therapee, another freebie I believe, to add to the list. BTW I have Gimp installed but only ever used it for its Perspective Tool (shift+P), never thought it might be a raw RAW Converter too. I like to switch between the progs.

For a raw converter it can be better to choose one & stick with it. The reason being that adjustments you make in one won't necessarily be read by another. Unless you convert your raws as a one-off operation, export a tif or a jpg, and then junk the original raw file. In which case it doesn't matter.

Also ... my 2nd camera is a canon so I think I should avoid the Nikon only converter.
