I'm about to upgrade my canon 5dmk3 I have several L lenses and couple of third party also a few canon flashes.
was thinking of the Nikon d810 and a couple of there zoom lenses 24 though 200mm f2.8 range.
Has any one made the leap from the same Canon to Nikon and if so what's your opinion on the swap from Canon to Nikon

I have done just that very recently, moved from a 5dmk3 to a D810. The reason was that I shoot a lot of wildlife and wanted the flexibility and aperture capabilities of the 200-400 f4. I'm glad I made the move but it isn't without its drawbacks. I've had to completely relearn the layout of a new body and I've had some very frustrating times out in the field. I've also had to build up my lens collection again. The 5d is a lovey camera and in terms of image quality the difference is negligible. If you are dead set on it because of a reason like a particular lens and you're happy to spend time relearning the layout then go for it.

I would also love to upgrade to the D810, but at the moment I have the D800 so the upgrade is not really financially wise. for lenses my most useful ones are the AFS 24-70mm F2.8 and for distance the new AFSs 80-400 mm F4.5-5.6 and also the AFS 70p -200 f2.8.

Interesting to note what you say about IQ, do you find the D810 pulls ahead due to the higher MP when you start to crop heavily? Also with wildlife I guess the extra 3ev dynamic range isn't really relevant either.

I shoot Nikon, but I don't think I'd switch over a specific body... they change too frequently. I own the D810 and use it frequently. But I would guess that less than 50% of the time it actually benefits me at all. A large percentage of the time where there is a benefit, the benefit is minor. And maybe 20% of the time I actually come close to using the full potential of the camera.

There have been times where I've considered swapping to Canon because they have some lens options that Nikon (and 3rd party) refuses to offer. But, I'm invested too heavily in Nikon. And the Canon lenses I'm concerned with are "specialty" tools, expensive, and wouldn't get that much use.

You need a very good reason to make that kind of change, unless it's a serious GAS attack and can afford the huge financial hit for no objective benefit. Canon and Nikon have been six of one, half dozen of the other for decades.

Given that the Canon 5D Mk4 is due to be announced next month (or certainly very soon) then it seems like madness. Or if it's just more pixels you want, there's already the Canon 5Ds and 5DsR with rather a lot of those.

Lots of good advice here .
I think i'll wait until the release of the 5dmk4 and see what that offers. And I know what your saying jetpack I was asked to photograph a friends wedding who was a professional photographer and he wanted me to use his Nikon d3s and lenses.
Even though I was using my 1ds mk2 and 1dmk2n at the time
That was a stressful day even spending 48 hours before the big day playing with his Nikon gear

Richard gives good advice. I would wait to see what the 5D4 brings. Given that Canon seem to have gone some way to addressing one of there sensor weaknesses, i.e low ISO dynamic range, it will be interesting to see what the 5D4 has got to offer.

Surely you could have got the same flexibility with the Canon 200-400 f4, even more with its built in converter. Unless you had very little invested in Canon lenses to make the move financially viable.

Nikon 200-400 is £5k, the Canon £12k

That's an awful lot of outlay, plus a learning curve to climb, for a fairly marginal upgrade to the body and a slight downgrade to the lenses. (The Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II are both better than the Nikon equivalents, mainly because they're newer designs.)

What exactly are you seeking to achieve?

Isn't the Nikon 24-70mm VR the newest of the lot?

Well, yeah. But the IQ is compromised by the VR system, and in this respect it's not really any better than the old non-VR version.

Think you've exaggerated the price of the Canon somewhat.

How hard is it to check before you post something so far out.

Harsh. Don't think it really matters that much. The point is there is a gulf between the cost of the Nikon version and the Canon version. No need to point out inaccuracies in such away.

Be polite.

It matters. If you're going to make a comment regarding something then be accurate. Posting wildly inaccurate prices as a way of justifying choice doesn't make the poster look very well informed does it?

No it doesn't, but I did google it before posting and that was the price it came up at. Don't know where from though but will try and find it again.

We all make mistakes and I'm always happy to be corrected, but would be nice to get the benefit of the doubt too befor

Edit, here's my source, says £11,999 which I rounded to 12k ;)

And yes I now realise that that source was from 2013
