I have a Nikon 600mm AIS ED 5.6. Beast of a lens, just a PITA that I have to manually focus, and adjust the exposure, manually. And on my D5000, thats exactly what I have to do...although I believe the higher end bodies (D200 +) will operate in aperture priority. Not ideal for BIF!

However....If I use my EOS 30D on it, with a cheap adapter, I get AF confirm (actually beeps!!), auto exposure and all the metering! Put it this way, if I am using the 600, I'd prefer to stick a Canon on the end.

As a result, I am looking for a cheapo body (350D), as I can't afford to keep the 30D AND D5000.

Thought I'd let you guys know, as if you happen to have an AIS Nikkor...get an adapter, stick it on your EOS, and it'll be far more enjoyable to use.

Pity it's 5.6 -- you could have stuck a TC16A on and got AF as well :D

It is a nice lens though often overlooked due to the 500/4P, which supports metering on the lower end bodies.

BTW do note that the TC16A needs a modification to work with many bodies.

Very interesting . Perhaps upgrade to D200 / d300 or get something like 450D / 40D for that lens. Live view should be quite good option with that lens on a tripod.

Thanks for the advice. :D though, Andrew its actually the MF version from the 70s(?). Don't know much info on it though. Thing is, I'm not 100% committed to Nikon...yeah sure, of the Canons I've tried, the Nikons all seem to give much sharper results...though the 30D is the first Canon I've had that does seem pretty good...though again, the D5000 is better at higher ISOs, sharper etc. BUT Canon do pretty good video, and if Nikon don't improve theirs...may well get a 550D at some point and stick it on the 600. Live view on the D5k isn't bad on it, but still have to mess with the exposure and it doesn't give exposure preview...and the screen isn't hi resolution enough really. So s/h 500D, though top end in my price range, wouldn't be bad. I don't really like spending humungus amounts on 1 body....hence I'd rather have maybe to enthusiast ir something...Just a teensy 350D wouldn't take up much room, cost very little and would be much nicer to use on the 600 than the D5k. This is a photo of the lens, btw

Really!!?? I never knew that! But it wouldn't work because its 5.6?

My guess not too well as TCs on lenses slower than f4 are normally best avoided with the modern AF systems.

The TCs aren't too expensive, though the modification looks a little fiddly as you have to swap a couple of the contact pins/ connections round on the camera side of the TC and insert a small bit of plastic to lift the little lever on the lens mount.

Never seen anyone say why Nikon adjusted their contact block spec. -- they've tended to avoid changes more than most... maybe they saw issues and thought it better to separate a couple of the signals???

You can use it on the Canon with an 1.4TC (kenko 1.4x would do fine, or even the older 1.5x) and have an 840mm or 900mm MF lens with AF confirm!

Maybe I should get the lens off your hands :)

If anyone's interested in giving the TC16A a go there's some information on the modification here.

It's not something I've tried so...

...and it goes without saying that Nikon don't support or recommend using it on a modern body.

I'll have a read of that, thanks. BTW Michael, the video I posted of the robin singing, I'd used the 600 mm, and an old 2x converter, and its not that bad. Can't wait to try it on a canon!
