I have a Nikon 600mm AIS ED 5.6. Beast of a lens, just a PITA that I have to manually focus, and adjust the exposure, manually. And on my D5000, thats exactly what I have to do...although I believe the higher end bodies (D200 +) will operate in aperture priority. Not ideal for BIF!
However....If I use my EOS 30D on it, with a cheap adapter, I get AF confirm (actually beeps!!), auto exposure and all the metering! Put it this way, if I am using the 600, I'd prefer to stick a Canon on the end.
As a result, I am looking for a cheapo body (350D), as I can't afford to keep the 30D AND D5000.
Thought I'd let you guys know, as if you happen to have an AIS Nikkor...get an adapter, stick it on your EOS, and it'll be far more enjoyable to use.

. Perhaps upgrade to D200 / d300 or get something like 450D / 40D for that lens. Live view should be quite good option with that lens on a tripod.
