Nikon Camera upgrade

Hi all, some advise please I am upgrading my Nikon camera in September when my work bonus is due and really would like to know what people think is the best move to make. I have been looking at the 7000 Nikon... I will have just over the £1000 to spend and will be upgrading from D40... Thanks for your help as so many to choose from.
 
What do you take photos of mainly and what lenses do you have?:shrug:
 
At present I have the following lenses Nikon DX AF-s 18-55mm
Tamron AF 70-300mm
Nikon DX aF-S 55-200mm
Mainly I have taken landscape and wildlife photos and really loving Macro photography too.
 
If you are buying new
There is rumour (as usual) tat there will be new Nikon models available due to the Olympics etc. so a new model may be available.

If second hand
There are loads of D300s's and D700 available at bargain prices on the classified forum due to the D800 release.

September is ages away so you will have time to research your requirements
Sensor size
Camera weight
Accessories
Lens etc

Then you can buy a nice piece of glass (lens) as part of the kit.
The glass will last forever.
The camera will be out of date within a year
 
You could maybe buy a second hand D300s or D7000 and upgrade your lenses ?
 
Thanks... I really like the D7000 as have been looking at that for some time then there is the next hurdle is deciding on the lenses to get as all very confusing as far to much choice !!!!!

Going out on a limb here but personally I would consider upgrading your lenses as priority. Nothing wrong with your current line up but I feel you would see more return on investment by buying the odd tasty lens first and compromising on the body.

So.... assuming you could net £250 quid by selling your current lens line up and another £120 or so for your D40. So your budget for camera and lenses would be £1370.

£300 on a 70-300 VR
£200 on a Macro lens (take your pick)
£200 on a Tamron 17-50 2.8
£120 on a 35mm 1.8 (because you'll love it!)

Still leaves you £550 for a body which would get you a lovely low mileage D300.

You'd end up with a great lens line up and a pro level body.

I love spending other people's money. :)
 
Great advice from Graham there, you've already got a slight overlap in focal lenght with the 70-300 and 55-200. The line up Graham has chose seems pretty spot on. I picked up a D300 for under £500 and it's a big step up from the D40/D200/D80 I've had in the past.

You can also pick up a Sigma 17-50 F/2.8 for close to £150 nowadays which is great bang for buck. The 35mm F/1.8 is a lens I've owned and miss (currently torn between another one and a Sigma 30mm f/1.4).

Are you aware that your DX lenses on a full frame D700 will not allow the camera to function at it's best (only 5MP if using DX lenses).

The D7000 will be fine though.

Disagree and I've just returned my D7000. The D90 does me just fine and I saw no real difference in my images ie I got exactly the same image out of both cameras.

The "goodies" like high iso, 2 slots and custom sets are nice to have but not essential for me. A D90 will not disappoint. And it's focus is spot on without adjustment!!
 
If you are considering the D300s you can pick up a brand new one at Currys/PC World for £769.91. They had them on clearance in Chesterfield branch last week.

i am aware the D90 is a good camera, i owned one.

Pretty much what I would say - for Macro the Tamron 90mm is hard to beat at that price. Could look at a 50mm instead of the 35mm or a 28-75 2.8 instead of the 17-50 depending on what focal lenths you use most.

D300 is a cracking camera, although D90 is no slouch.
