Was at a photo shoot today and my D810 started intermittently showing an Err message. It happened when attache dto both my Sigma 120-300 with 1.4TC and my Sigma 150-600. Fixed with battery removal, replacement and shutter click but not how to capture the moment.

I've had similar issues with my D500 although mainly with the 120-300 and 1.4TC

One of the other guys in the hide today has a D810 and advised that the ERR message and cleared from a battery removal happens to him occasionally.

Thinking of sending all off for a service but that's looking at £700+:(:(:(:(

Would welcome any experiences from other D810/ D500 users on this in case there's a DIY approach or something else(I've cleaned the lens and camera contact pins before today)

Did you ever get the error with just a lens attached? Have you thought about it being the t/c is it a nikon or another make?

It's a sigma lens with a sigma tc and I get the err with the bare 150-600 attached

I’ve only ever had one Err message on my D810 but it ended up costing me £530 to get the PCB replaced.

Err messages on the D750 have been signs of an imminent shutter failure/issue. Hope it’s not the same with yours.

I know some third party lenses can cause occasion lock ups with Nikon (although I thought that was mainly the Tamron 150-600) and the only way to ‘fix’ it is the battery removal trick. That being said when mine’s locked up it’s never had the err message.

According to Nikon support...

My camera shows "Err" on the top LCD, what does that mean?
When you see Err on the control panel, LCD monitor or viewfinder of your digital camera it refers to a camera malfunction. Try the following:

  1. Remove all accessories from the camera.
  2. Install a freshly charged battery into the camera.
  3. If your Nikon camera offers a hardware reset button, then please follow those instructions provided in the product manual.
Please note that while a 2-button reset option offered with some cameras will reset your camera menus, it will not correct an "Err" message. This problem is generally mechanical. If these steps do not resolve the Err message we recommend having a Nikon Authorized Repair Technician evaluate the Nikon camera. Click here for repair information.

I used to have a Sigma 1.4 tele converter and it fell apart on me ,so did the replacement. , Nothing but trouble they come loose/ apart too easily inside the casing

I had the err message on my first outing with the D810 with a 200-400 attached. The advice on here was clean the camera and lens contacts, I’ve never had an issue with it since but it sounds like you have already done this.

Does the err message occur when you have a Nikon lens attached? I ask this as could there be a compatibility issue with the sigma lenses? Sigma have to backwards engineer their lenses and there is that small chance it may not be communication right with newer Nikon cameras. If the same lenses have caused the issue on both a D500 and D810 that potentially means there could be an issue with the lens. I always thought sigma were quite good at updating lens firmware if an older lens needed it.

I'll have another go at cleaning them and try to check out with the sigma again and some nikon lenses.

Main issue is that it's intermittent therefore fixing it and trying to recreate is a pain.

Have you tried the rubber eraser thing for cleaning the contacts?
I had this on an Olympus body and lens, cleaned the contacts with the eraser and no problems since.

I think the err code is a catch all error code for several problems. It probably doesn't help that Nikon give a couple of ideas of what the cause could potentially be and then say it's likely a mechanical fault. On the D750 mechanical fault seems to be a likely cause but as we have seen on this thread one person had a PCB replaced and others like me it's a lens/camera communication issue. If only they used a variety of error codes it would be so much easier.

Yep

Ami looking at a d500 and d810 replacements or has some dirt or pin problem on a lens moved something in camera. Both are in warranty but how to tell if its a warranty or servicing issue? Especially as its intermittent

I don't think you answered this question Jim.

Phone a Nikon service department and see what they advise. It’s interesting it happening on two cameras, either that’s very unlucky or there is a fault somewhere else in the chain.
