Had my heart set on getting a 50mm 1.8G and then a Nikon F90x, was going to use the lens on both the f90x and my D90. But then i realized that the G lenses 'dont work' in Manual and Shuttter priority on the f90x.

So do I just buy the 50 1.8D? or look at getting a newer film bodies, F80 etc?

I was going to use the 50 as a portrait lens on the digi, and a walkround on the film. I only have 1 G lens at the moment and hope to upgrade it soon, and all the lenses i plan on buying are D or Manual lenses.

Any advice or suggestions would be nice :D

Get the 1.8 D. It's a super lens.

I have looked at the F80, only things that are stopping me, looks a little cheap design of body (Durability, ergonomics) and no PC port.

Silly things really, but its all worth considering. How does the f80 feel for you?
 
The F80 is a great camera. I bought one a few years ago that was a pro's spare spare so had only had a couple of films though it and was still boxed! Brilliant camera and works with all the new lenses that don't have aperture rings too.
 
Depends how much weight you put in the improvements that the 1.8G brings to the 50mm lens design. Don't care? Buy the D. Thinks it makes a massive difference? Buy the G, buy a Nikon film camera that fully supports it.

The D is certainly no slouch though!

I had an F80 until last week when I sold it to finance a move into medium format. I think it's a solid camera that's particularly handy if you own newer lenses (e.g., AF-S, G, VR, etc.).

They're quite light, so it's a great camera for carrying all day or for just throwing in your bag when going out for the day. It also made quite the compact package when paired with my 50mm f/1.8 non-D lens.

I don't really understand any questions or concerns regarding durability with these cameras, as you can simply just buy another one given how cheap they are if anything were to ever happen. It shouldn't be too hard to find one for £20-£30.

I actually think the F80 is quite well designed ergonomically with the contours of the body better suiting my hands than earlier Nikon 35mm models. In fact, I think a number of digital models are based on the F80 design.

The only thing I really didn't like about them is the viewfinder, which is smaller than my other 35mm bodies (FM and F-801) and it doesn't show any change in depth of field for lenses faster than f/2 (although it blows away my digital cameras in both of these respects). As I often use my Samyang 85mm at f/1.4 quite a bit, I really like to be able to see 1.4 through the viewfinder.
 
The F80 cost nearly £400 new, and is probably the direct equivalent to the D90 in todays line up. It is a very good camera and for the prices they go for today, they're a steal. It'll definitely feel small and insubstantial compared to the Bronica in your profile, and it doesn't feel as substantial in the hand as my F100 and F6, however, I did pay a lot more money for them.
 
I would LOVE to own an F6 at some point but an F5 is a close second. Most mainstream 35mm film cameras are reasonably cheap now. An F80 really is a steal but do look at the models above too, F90, F90X, F100, F5. I have several film cameras with most being Nikon, the EM, FM & F80. My favourite is the FM which is just lovely but the F80 is my main film camera.
 
I have an F80 and F90X and if I had to choose, it would be the F90X, only for one thing and that is it just feels and holds more like the Nikon I know and love.

I couple my F90X with a Nikkor 50mm AFD and a Sigma 24mm super wide( do not spread this around) and both the camera and lenses work very well together, the Sigma is just a brilliant lens.

I thought the flash sync was slower at 1/125th? I have an F80 & it is an OK camera. I have added an MB-16 to mine. Gets you away from expensive CR2 batteries & onto AA's. I also find that the extra bulk it adds makes the camera sit better in my hand.

F90x is a great camera....and there is one for sale in here :)
 
The F-801(s) is also a very underrated camera with flash synch of 1/250, I believe. Moreover, it has a large HP viewfinder and it can meter Ai and AIS lenses.

The best part: it's seriously cheap too! I got mine for £5.20 off of eBay in great condition.

Yeah but it got the same issue as the f90x it won't let me use manual and aperture modes with g lenses :(

My only other thought it spend more money and get a F100, as it works fully with the G lenses and has a high sync speed.

Well because I'll have to deal with my current g lens for a while before upgrading and it may limit my lens choices later on. It's not that much of a big deal, I just wanted to see what people thought? F80 with 50 G or F90x with 50 D?

Now you're talking! The F100 is an awesome camera, I love mine as it just feels so right in the hand. It's bigger than the F80, but better off for it.
 
F100 is probably my favourite camera, ever..... I have owned many cameras and some, like the Mamiya C330f, are great but for sheer enjoyment and quality the F100 is head and shoulders above them all. Its as simple as you want it to be or as complicated, just all around brilliant.

I have to agree with that;
even though I NEVER shoot film any more,
some strange force stops me from getting rid of my F100 :bonk:.

Open up another tab on your t'internet and go to AG Photographic and buy a couple of rolls of film. When it arrives take down (with due care and reverence) your saintly F100 open up the back, load film, shoot roll of film and get it developed.

Then you can sit back and look at the glory that has been missing from your easy, digital life.....:thumbs::lol:

I am a real Nikon fan and until recently shot almost exclusively with an F3HP an FE2 and an FM2n, all cameras I love.

However, I have of late only used my recently acquired F100. Twenty rolls or so of film in, my conclusion is that it is bl**dy marvelous. It handles wonderfully, has great metering, works well with my ageing eysight and cost a fraction in 2012 of the price it commanded when new. Why o why did I not discover this camera years ago!

Mine was boxed mint for under £110 including delivery. If you can stretch your budget it is well worth living on beans on toast for a while to acquire.

Defo the F100 is all the 35mm camera you will probably need. Everything is in the same place as the modern digi's and solid. The only camera that pips it is the F6, but they are all minty and boxed and so nobody dare use them.
 
Or go the other way and get a clumping gert F2, bloody marvelous camera these, love mine to bits.
Next up would be an FM model, mechanical fantastic.
 
The F100 is very appealing to me too, and I nearly just bought one at a very good price. It's amazing how cheap these are nowadays. However for me the show stopper is its abilities with manual focus lenses (AI/AI-S types), since that's all I own. It does meter with them but not with matrix or program modes, and you get no aperture information in the display. I'm also a sceptical about focusing fast or long lenses without a split prism.

To be honest, I have no real reason to look beyond my F2 and F3, except perhaps for the flash capability and built in motordrive (though I do have the drive for the F3 if I really need it, which I don't :lol:). But that doesn't stop me wanting something else....

Or would an F6 be the only real cure for my GAS? :shake:

There is no cure for GAS apart from complete penury or giving your credit cards to the other half to look after :lol:

She's worse than me. Not cameras, but clothes and other non-essential items. At least my cameras can be sold more or less for what I paid, unlike a flippin pair of shoes.
 
It would be an interesting test to take control of each other's finances and then each have to present and justify your proposed expenditure. Or do you think it would all end in tears and divorce :lol:

The f6 feels even better to use than the f100. I probably use my f6 more than my f100 at the moment. It was mint and boxed when I treated myself to a used one last year, even down to the body being bagged. It feels like an f100 on steroids, but in a good way. I keep debating getting a grip for it as the f100 benefits from being gripped, but it might become a bit too big then, like the d700 does.
