Nikon has announced its latest consumer-level DSLR, the D60. It's a 10.2MP digital camera that will look and feel remarkably familiar to users of the D40X. It includes an anti-dust system that incorporates a self-cleaning sensor unit that shakes off dust, coupled with an airflow system designed to channel dust away from the sensor. The model also adds active d-lighting, a stop-motion recording mode and Expeed branding.

It's not exactly ground breaking stuff is it!
I'm sure someone will buy one.
 
It doesn't quite have the wow factor on paper that the 450D has managed and still no AF motor in the body which may not be a big deal in the real world but seems to influence peoples purchases!

Inclined to agree with you I don't see how this is going to win them sales in this sector, alot of people shop of spec lists and this doesn't stack up hugely well given the current crop of entry level cameras with live view etc included.

I was hoping they would release something that made people sit up and take notice, I have no interest in buying one but competition is good for everyone.
 
If they had put the AF motor back in it would be better imo.

If something happens to my D50 that would be too expensive to fix, I can just as well sell the whole Nikon kit (OK, it's just 2 lenses and a flash for now, but it still isn't a small sum), as I don't have the money for a D80 and I would hate to ask for one (got the D50 as a Christmas present, I'm loving it so far, too).

I'd probably have to grab a Pentax K100D or something in that price range that's usable with cheap 3rd party lenses. Or be more than half a year with a PowerShot A510 (not a bad camera, but D50 is way above it in all ways except for compactness).

My bet is that what Messiah Khan wrote is going to be a D80 replacement... sometime this year, perhaps.
I wouldn't mind live view in the 'next D80' for close-ups.
 
I can't see where this fits in, other than the fact it comes with a 18-55 VR kit lens it doesn't seem any point to it. Should have been much better spec to sit between D50 and D80 not as a D40 update.

I assume from this post that the D60 doesn't support a battery grip! Seems strange, as the D40/x was criticised for not having one.
 
I have a Hanel D40x battery grip on mine its ace? or do you mean a genuine Nikon version?

Do you have a vertical shutter release that works without having to put the camera in remote shutter release mode? Do it have a thumbwheel?
 
It doesn't have a vertical shutter release, but I saw one on Ebay somewhere that did. The Batteries last forever now though and it balances the camera better when I have the 70-300mm VR on it.

I've got a cheap third party one (From some random chinese make) with the shutter release. But this is the problem, the D40/D40X was never designed to have one, so doesn't have any contacts to interface with the grip. This means that the shutter release acts as a remote shutter, so you have to go into the menu and enable the remote shutter each time you want to use the vertical shutter release. Other than that, I agree is makes the camera feel better and the battery capacity is more than good. But I would like to see the D60 to have included contacts to enable a fully functional battery grip to be produced.
