Nikon (and Canon) getting heavy with "parallel imports"

Yes
Good report in The Register.

Australians are ripped off even more than the UK with 'creative pricing' it would seem, so one firm, JB HiFi, has made a stand by advertising parallel imported cameras on its online store lower than the 'official' prices, and the manufacturers are getting nasty.

Canon and Nikon are going ballistic. Looking around the local reports, Canon is darkly warning about “relationships”, while Nikon has flicked the switch to Vaudeville, pulled on the scary mask, and rolled out the Halloween “grey market” fright-stories about warranty, product support, the terrible risk of getting a manual not in English, and a real sting-in-the-tail: firmware.

Good for JB. Hopefully it will lead to the eventual ending of charging what the market will stand, in favour of a fair price for the product.

We can always dream!

It is a bit strange when the large companies talk about 'free trade' being essential to our nations. They mean no protectionism or tariffs for their products or use of cheap labour, not 'free trade' for consumers.

My girlfriend just picked up the new kindle from a large, reputable store in Florida for £52! The UK is roughly 70% more expensive.....

As mid_gen said eh?

1) I am a 65 year old pensioner & I get £120/week in pension & benefits. A fair price for me will be £350.

2) I am pro photographer & I earn £30K profit from photography. A fair price for me is £975.

3) I am an NEET so I want a massive discount on the fair price that those with money coming in are offered it at!!!

no idea what its like in Aus but in the EU manufacturers are not allowed to tell shops what to sell at. If they stop supplying because of it they will get hit with huge fines

By fair price I mean 'production and transport costs plus profit' where profit is the same the world over, rather than 'we can get way with charging £500 in the UK, but we'll only charge £300 somewhere else'.

Ah I see. You have a fair point then. Apologies if my original post reply was daft.

Mmm. We all know that is boolocks

But it would be fairer if it happened.

Its like everything else - its an attempt to maximise profit in each economic region. Simple as. We see it with DVD region encoding, and TBH with DVD plants worldwide, there is no other excuse

I've no idea how big JB HiFi are but B+H in New York have been doing this for years with no problems.
