Nikon af-s 70-300 f4.5-5.6 vr - not focusing?

I used my nikon 70-300 the other day, 1st time for a while on my D750. I notice that when I was focusing at 70mm the lens was fine but as soon as I extended the focusing, the focus spot in the view finder kept flickering on & off and would not lock on for any length of time. Has anyone any ideas? Or is it just a case of sending off to be sorted.

I should add that my other lens are fine and it is just the 70-300 that is playing up.

First thing, I would suggest, is ensuring that the manual / auto focus button is fully engaged. Then clean the contacts.
