Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8G Lens

Have you tried shooting at 50mm with your kit lens? A lot of people find 50mm quite a long focal length on a crop sensor, the 35mm f/1.8 giving a more useable field of view....

Not used it but apparently it's very good for the money.

Can I ask what you want to shoot with it? could be that 50mm isn't the length you want...

I have this lens, and it is very good for the price that it is. I couldn't buy the 50mm 1.8D as it won't autofocus with my D5100, and the 50mm 1.4 AF-S was out of the price range that I had in mind for a 50 :)

Digitalrev's review and comparison of this lens to the 1.4 version actually shows that the 1.8 is sharper in the corners. I am very happy with the results that I got from mine.

The 50mm is a great focal length on a crop sensor for portraits. Its the one i use the most then my 85 (on a d300)

In which case you have little option as none of the other sensibly priced primes will autofocus on your body. But don't worry, it's a great lens.

I did have 1.8 D version, and was looking at 1.4G.
But glad I bought 1.8G and saved few quid and its my favourite lens after 35mm.;)

Hi there, I use a 50mm 1.8 on my D90, ad generally I would say if Im taking portraits of the children I need to be at least 4m away from them. Ideally on a D90 you would need to be 4-6m away from the subject depending on the type of portrait.
