My partner is finding the Nikon 105mm macro lens a bit on the heavy side for close ups. How does the 40mm compare in terms of quality?

You will have to get in a lot closer, but it's a solid little lens, that would also make for a nice portrait lens on side. There isn't really any 'bad' macro lenses, they are always sharp and optically sound all around. They're just a bit slow for other types of shooting.

Thanks for that. It's just that the 105mm is so heavy when trying hand held shots of flowers or butterflies and the like.

Take a look at the Nikon 60mm macro, lovely lens and nice and light yet well made. If she has a camera with built in af motor then the older AFD model is cheaper and every bit as good. If it is a DX camera (and I'm guessing it is as the 40mm is DX only) then Tamron do an excellent 60mm f2 lens.

The 105 is comparatively heavy... might one of the other options work?

Nikon 40: 235g
Nikon 85: 355g

Tamron 90: 400g

Nikon 60: 425g
Nikon 105: 720g

Olympus u43 60mm: 185g
