Just wondering if anyone has got this lens and how it compares to the 18-55 VR kit lens that comes with the Nikon D3100 obviously it doesn't have zoom and is a prime lens.

I can personally vouch for this lens, I think it's fantastic. Depends what kind of work you do however and whether you think you will miss the flexibility of the zoom range. I find it to be sharp 9 times out of 10 and its very light and a bargain at the price you can pick it up for

Stunningly sharp and excellent contrast, the kit lens is not in the same league. You will not miss the VR and as it is effectively 52mm on a DX it is a perfect length.

Thanks guys what would you say you use this lens most for portraits & landscapes?

I'm looking to use it as a walkabout lens rather than the 18-55.

i have the 50 1.8 and the 85 1.8 might have to get rid and replace with the 35 think it would suit me better.

Love my 35mm! Hardly been off my camera since I've had it!

I have used this lens for both in the past. Can get some really nice portraits with it if your good with focusing, but you do have to get a little bit close to the subject or crop in.

Landscape wise some of my favourite landscape shots have been with this lens. Not as wide as I prefer but still good results.

As far as using it as a walk about lens, I think it is good at that. Last year I went to Bristol for a day and only used this lens and got some really good results. Plus, its low light capabilities mean you can shoot longer handheld when the light starts to drop.

Just to add, despite being small and quite light I have found it to be very robust, have used it in pouring rain and some rough conditions and it hasn't let me down.

Hope this helps
