Hi, with my birthday arriving soon, I am asking for a new camera (a nikon d200). However, I need a lens also. Considering that I will be shooting motorsport and aircraft, would the lens mentioned in the title do the job? Also, whilst searching through the lenses. I found that lenses marked as AF-S were more expensive than those marked AF. As I have a certain price range (around £260 for lens and body) those marked AF are the only ones that I can "afford". Will this decrease the quality and accuracy of my pictures?

Cheers, Alistair

Do you mean THIS one, if so it is a very capable lens and has good reviews go for it.(y)

I have just sold my copy of the lens linked to by sbowler579 above so have no agenda here.

I can though honestly say that coming from very, very expensive lenses down to the 70-300f4.5-5.6 VR I was shocked at how well it performed. Nice and sharp, fast to focus and reasonably lightweight. Your budget should get you a good used copy here on TP Classifieds..

sbowler579- Do you mean the AF lens has good reveiws or the AF-S lens?

The more modern (and more expensive) VR version of the 70-300 Nikon is AF-S but the older non stabilised version is AF-D (or -G). The VR version is optically significantly better than the older version as well as having the (often quite handy, especially when limited to IS0 800) VR. Having said that, the older lens will do the job but not as well as the newer one. Buy 2nd hand and you should be able to recoup the cost when you upgrade.
