HI All,
Just out of curiosity I tried to achieve the same kind of recovery on this image,
basically to recover the “in shadow” area on a back-lit subject.

I shoot in RAW and use PSE 7 for post processing.

The process involves converting the Nikon RAW (NEF) image file in to Adobe PSE 7 format via a standard Adobe/Nikon Addin.

All Image 100% Crop

1 – Original – No pre or post-processing...

2 – Using the Nikon Addin pre-processing controls only...

3 – Using PSE 7 post-processing controls only...

Any comments or hints and tips welcome.

Number 3 is the better edit maybe add a bit more colour or vibrance to it, number 2 seems to be blown out and sort of fuzzy looking..

No2 has a massive "artifact" halo especially round edges in the left of the image, which is probably all ove the image making it "fuzzy"

Yes no 2 looks noticably softer and the fringing has really shown up.

I was surprized at the amount of fringing in No2.
One difference between the two methods is in PSE7 you can work back and forth with the changes. With the Nikon pre-process you set the controls and think the image is then processed in one hit.
