Hi

I have a 50mm f1.8 and a 35mm f1.8, is it worth getting rid of the 50mm and getting a 85mm to use with my D80 as a general walk about and potrait lens.

Or should I just stick with the 50mm.

Thank you

85mm f/1.8 is one of my fave lenses - it produces fantastic results, feels great and can be picked up for <£240 2nd hand.

keep them all.

I wouldn't, the 50mm is a good length for portraits on a cropped sensor...

Question is, do you often find the 50mm too wide?

Yup, all rests on this question. As a portrait lens, fine, but I think most people would agree the 85mm is way too close for a general walkabout lens, but it depends on how you feel about the current lenses really.

Thanks you all for the replys. I have not used the 50mm as much as I had hoped to.

I might stick to it for now and see how it goes.

Thanks

My 85mm gets way more use nowadays than my 50mm simply because the IQ is better, but as mentioned it can be on the close side - but I like a tight crops so it kind of suits what I like anyway so it's a matter of taste.

If I could only have one of them I'd probably go for the 50mm though....

Keep the 50 and save up for the 85, then maybe switch out the 50 1.8 to a 1.4

I currently use the 35 1.8 but want another lens, bit more reach, but prime for portraiture. Stuck between 50 1.8 and 85 1.8.. then the 50 1.4 comes into it :gag:

I have the 35, 50 and soon the 85. I love prime and I do find a use for each one of them

I have all 3 and think it's worth having all 3. The only thing i'd do if i was you, is consider selling the 50 1.8 and saving up a bit for a 50 1.4, just to get that killer 1.4 aperture in one of your lenses. I got a 50 1.4 for about 200 quid whereas the85 1.4 would set you back way more, and the 35 1.4 WAY more...

Good comment - the 50mm f/1.4 is a steal. Some great arty shots to be had with this.
