Nikon 85mm 1.4G or Sigma 85mm 1.4 HSM?

Well after 3 weeks from ordering it I am told that my Sigma 85mm 1.4 HSM should be with me tomorrow :clap:. The problem with all this waiting is that now I am wondering whether I should have ordered the Nikon 85mm 1.4 G :thinking:.

Do you think that I should stick with the Sigma or just take it back and go for the Nikon?

Maybe see if you're happy with the Sigma when it arrives?

Ive never seen the same creaminess in the images from the Nikon. I can pretty much tell a shot by the sigma straight away, it just has this amazing contrasty excellence. Ive never seen a shot from the Nikon compare.
 
The Nikon will be better, but that's why it's over a grand. Don't forget the 85mm D is known affectionately as the 'cream machine' and also worth a look. I'd wait until you tested the Sigma though.
 
never used the sigma but all the pictures posted on here from it look great.
i had the choice and money so went with nikon and i find it very sharp,it focuses well,and i love the images from it.
though i do think there is a special look with the sigma also.i would like to get one to compair at some point.

check my flickr account for nikon 85mm 1.4g pictures,most are edited but there are a few straight from the camera only exported through lightroom with exported sharpening applyed(they should also be in the people and portrate section on here)

That doesn't follow really. Sigma's business model normally is to make cheaper third party equivalents, so the additional cost for the Nikkor shouldn't really come into it.

That said, the Nikkor 1.4g is a beast of a lens - but I've no experience of the 85 1.4 sigma to compare it to
 
As someone who has used the Nikon 1.4D and the Sigma which i currently own, I would say the sigma is better. I have no experience with the G version of the nikon but TBH and this is my opinion I really cant see the G version being £600 better, Sure you will get a slightly better build quality but I love my sigma 85mm and have not regretted the decision to buy it over the Nikon G version :)

I ordered Nikon 85G and I was unhappy with the copy I've received. The AF was slow and I didn't like the IQ wide open. I sent it back and ordered Sigma 85/1.4. It was a huge surprise for me, in a good way. Better AF (oh, yeah, that's true!) and the IQ is amazing. I love the skin rendering of this lens... it really shows a unique character. I recommend you to test it... for me there is no reason to pay one extra grand for a lens that IMHO on field is not on par with Sigma.
 
i want the nikon 85 1.4g so so bad! but i have trouble justifying it to myself because it is so expensive... maybe one day! i wouldn't bother with the sigma if you can afford the nikkor.
 
Well I would have gone and tried both and then ordered the one I preferred.

I have the sigma 85mm f1.4, and I love it! Check my previous posts for some of my work with it, contrasty, creamy, sharp, great af. I compared to the nikon afs g and the afd. Now if I thought the nikon g was worth it, trust me I would have bougt it. But the fact is, and the guy I purchased it from agreed, the sigma is just as good, if anything more contrasty wide open, and half the price? No brainer. Seriously I had the money there for the nikon. In the end with the money I saved I put it towards a nikon 35mm afs g :)

I try to avoid buying into badges and badge snobbery, instead I try to buy the best thing at the price point.

How much and how big are they? All new lenses have a certain amount, I spent 1500 on a nikon 35mm last week and even that has some tiny specs if you look in the light.
 
It is big that I can easily see it. Anyway, they ll have a look at it and see it they can do anything about it.

Annoying that lenses like that end up in the retail channel. Very poor quality control. Sure you get your purchase money back, but you have lost time, travel, postage, disappointment.

Just picked up a Sigma 85mm and first glance im impressed! Well built, solid, fast af nice creamy bokeh and colours
 
Just undertaken delivery of my Nikkor 85mm f1.4G. First impressions??? Awesome!!! Can't wait to use it in anger!

il be doing some "real world" tests tomorrow hopefully, but just a quick bokeh test here. 2 shots with same exposure and processing (just auto tone). one with d7000 and nikon 50mm G @ 1.4 image cropped slightly, 2nd shot d700 85mm @1.4. may do a comparison with the 70-200 later on as well.

I've just bought the Siggy 85mm f1.4 and I'm very impressed.

It seems to be sharper than the Siggy 50mm f1.4 and doesn't seem to suffer the blooming around bright subjects that the 50mm can suffer from at the widest apertures. There is fringing but not so much as the 50mm and it's gone by f2.8.

I've never really worried too much about sharpness but golly gosh, this one is sharp, I couldn't believe how sharp it is at f1.4.
