Hi Photographers :)

I need to buy a used Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 for my d300 and i could not find any shop in London who sells it and the one who have it, their prices are sky high (Grays of Westminster selling it for 700+, appertureuk, cameraworld, LCE all either don't have it or selling for 600+.

I found few good deals on eBay buy was outbid 5 times in last second plus I want to have a look at lens before i buy it.

HDEW and procamerashop are selling new for 650 but I am not sure if I should buy from them.

Any idea/suggestion/advice please....

Which one are you after as there are a few variants;I have a push-pull 'd' which I got from this forum but to be honest I'm struggling to get sharp shots at the moment,need to hone the technique a bit:bonk:.

Just and a look on Grays and it seems to go from £425 for an original non 'd' push-pull to £1085 for an AF-S;it maybe that that last af-s may actually be old new stock:thinking:.MPB have them from £500-£694 so that looks like the going rate for shop bought ones.

Hi Barry,

I am looking for later two touch version. Don't want push pull, I think that would be hard to use.....

Yes as I say above it's a steep re-learning curve after using a zoom with VR:lol:

Might be worth hanging around here a bit and seeing if there are other options or if you can get one in the classifieds when you can post there:thumbs:.
 
I think you'll struggle to get a two ring for under £600, the only ones I've seen less than that have been the push/pull ones.

I got the 2 ring one none AFS for around 850 new but grey import about 3 years ago so I'd say 650 isn't a bad price

Where did you buy new one? i mean grey import.
 
I think your best bet is ebay. You've just gotta pu your max bid in and take your chances. If you have to have this lens then you may have to put a max bid maybe £25 over what the other ones you've been outbid on sold for.

I had the 80-200 afs two ring version, briefly. Was in terrible condition so returned it, but it worked very well
 
I would go with MPB Photographic and save over a hundred :)

I think they will also give a 6 month warranty? (maybe 3, can't remember).
 
That's not a bad price at all for the later version. I had the old Push-pull, second version [with the crinkle coating] - and loved it. It didn't have a tripod collar, the newer ones do. Fantastic lens, I paid about £450 for that push-pull one but would happily have paid another £150+ for the newer version.
 
It is a hard lens to use......it needs lots of light and good technique. I had major issues with my two touch. Sent it to fixation to get the manual/auto focus switch replaced (this breaks easily) and to get the auto focus re calibrated. Fixation said it was fine. It worked well on my d300 but useless on my d300s and d90. Tried adjusting for back focus and forward focus issues with little joy.

Do a little google search for Nikon 80-200 focus issues and you will get many, if I was going to buy one I'd definitely want to try it on my body first. :bang:

I bought a D600 and nifty fifty from them. Had to return the 50mm due to purple glare in centre frame. The turnaround was 3 days and they returned my postage. Fantastic service.
 
That can be the case with any model though. I had a few duds in my time, across the board - Nikon, Sony, Tamron, Sigma.

The one thing I didn't really like about the old push-pull type was having no tripod collar. Not just for use on a tripod, as I rarely do use one, but for attaching to a black rapid [or similar style] strap. I could only attach to the body, with lens attached, which is a little dodgy as the D90 isn't the toughest.

In the end I sold it on for the 70-200 VR II, and tbh, the image quality is just as good from the 80-200! For half the price.
